Actually it is best to avoid totally discharge of the battery for li-ion battery. As such, I will change the battery when it reaches the last bar. Another is to off your camera when you are looking for a subject to take.

Cheers
John

On the contrary i read that it best to leave some charge on the li-ion batt rather than have it completely drained..for pro-longed storage at least left 30% of the power remained in the batt

Li-ion battery need a certain amount of charge left before it can be recharged, if you go below that amount of charge, your battery will be pronounce dead. Cannot be charge back. That what happen to one of my fren's Li-ion battery, beacuse he left it uncharged for 2 mths after a full discharge, end up having to change the battery.
