Newbie qn: What's a good tripod??

Just bought a Nikon branded tripod for $35 (dunno if it's considered a good deal or not, 4 section, quick release, relatively short).

Read pple always talk abt the stability and the good/bad of a tripod. Qn: what constitute a good tripod and how do you assess if a tripod is stable/unstable?
