I used to use PC 80gb hdd to store my pics and files. Recently it crashed.
All my FZ20's pics tata liao. Yes, my airport, wild flowers series and etc... all gone. Luckily for my China trip, I burnt the selected one to CD for colleagues and friends to view. It's now my archived CD.

As for my other pics taken with LC20 and LC33, its were safely archived to CD before the two months old Samsung hdd crashed.

Now, fresh pics are stored to PC hdd, duplicate on external hdd, and periodically archived to CD once its reach 700mb.

As for pics type, I archive original pics only.

Do backup your pics. It's no joke when your hard work got wiped out!!!

Good advice. Back up is important. Do note also that CD disks do not last forever. Something to do with the dye used in the disc. So check you CDs and copy it into a fresh one every two years or so - if you really want to be safe.

Cost wise, the DVD burner has dropped quite a bit. On a double layer DVD disc, one can store 7 plus gig of pics as well. You may consider it over cd as well.

my advise is to copy your pix into harddisk (external one) for quick access from your PC/laptop... failure rate of harddisk is high... therefore you need to backup into CD-R as well & store them in a safe place. CD-R is so cheap now a days... you might consider several backups if you pixs are ever so precious...

i learn my lesson when my harddisk failed on me... now i make several backup in CD-R... just like lost time... lost pixs can never be recovered...

i usually save in my hdd, cos I often look back at photos taken. too bad i using laptop, max 80gb (sianz). I also have external hdd 40gb.

besides saving in hdd, the most important is to back it up. usually backup allllll my photos into dvd once a few months. don't try to save cost in the dvds (not very expensive, comparing the great times you've that will never come back, and hard work).

i dun really advise saving into a cd once ... then store it forever. I suggest reburning after several years, to ensure nothing goes wrong.
