Hi... webby experts here. Another question...

Lets say I have multiple domain names... is it possible to point it to a single "host" but point to different sub-directories?

ie.. I've got a web storage space and want to split between myself and my child.. both with totally unique URLs... 1 is a .com, ther other is .per.sg.

    thanks

wah sey, you can't possibly digest all of these at one go. you can only digest a few (2 or 3 at most) at a time, or else you'll go crazy one. webhosting stuff is pretty straight forward, once set and its done. nothing to worry except the downtime if happens to have and such.

If you want to build a gallery on your website, there's many free scripts on the net for you to download. most of them have simple installation instructions and you're ready to go. I love to visit this site www.hotscripts.com for free scripts but currently they are doing maintenance.

If you really interest to learn web hosting/design. Why don't you build a very simple one and improve it when you are ready to go further ? Since you are new, better don't jump into things like flash ,php etc ...

Maybe can learn ASP script for a start.

Well, I build my company webpage only using ASP & SQL database and it serve as an information retreive / file downloading for clients etc ... cos my company don't want to spend too much on web design.

The best way to learn is to study others script.

Don, thanks for the link... will check it out once it's up.

espn, I wanted something like tomshen's web page. looks like standard template... but couldn't find it on the net. Alternatively, thinking of building the entire gallery using Flash... but very tedious loh... been trying and I can animate anything yet.

thanks for the advice... I actually got the hang of setting up (those generation 1) static page with hyperlinks all over the place... not elegant loh... ultimately I'll be using flash for my entire site... but dun know how to start with dynamic database...etc.

I wouldn't advise using flash for the whole site.. the interface got limitations.. the best is to start with some HTML, integrate slowly using flash, scripts, etc

Hmm quite alot to learn, it'll take about a year or 2 to get comfortable with the above. Let me help you along

You dont need CGI and perl if you know PHP. If you have learnt C before PHP is almost the same as C programming ( eg PHP also uses printf() ).

For content management software take a look at http://www.opensourcecms.com/ . I think they are all using PHP/Mysql.

Web hosting software..dont need to bother if you're using a host. But if you want to tryout your scripts at home first, use Microsoft's IIS ( Internet Information Services. To install it go to Add/Remove Programs and click on IIS. To administer the IIS go to control panel ->administrative tools->Internet Information Services. The IIS root directory is C:\inetpub\wwwroot .

For PHP get the PHP 5 installer (http://www.php.net/get/php-5.0.3-ins.../from/a/mirror) to auto configure IIS.

Mysql is a harder to use, most ppl install a GUI app like PHPMyAdmin to make their life easier when dealing with Mysql.
