I not happy. I signed up at Speaker's corner and PROTEST for unfair employment terms with other foreign workers. Let your voice heard. Can? Anything wrong? This is another avenue, legal assembly approved by authorities. Subject not related to issues that might affect racial harmony etc. Please lah, why so narrow minded

sgpojc, where on earth do you think you are now ?

Speakers Corner is only to blow hot air ..... no action nobody gets hurt or affected at end of the day.

Yes rhino123 and others have been correct to point out and correct my perspective of this issue

Whether its a wage or housing or working hours or unequal pay/benefits vs locals vs Malaysians etc etc ...... whatever the reasons....

there are laws, due and proper process for most things here
foreign friends who come here to live and work have to RESPECT AND FOLLOW the law
and this includes the law of how disputes are settled whether they are unionized or non-union
they cannot just come in and apply their own form of vigilante justice that they do in their own country

p/s maybe this is a good wake up call ..... in future make sure that essential services, functions and infrastructures do not fall hostage to foreign actions locally ?

Foreigners so privileged here, can demand this and that. Make noise here and there without consequences.

One sinkie stand in Hong Lim Park without permit, ho sey liao. Prepare to have the entire Special Operations Command (SOC) come down within 10 minutes and have some draconian acts shoved in your face as you get forcefully led into a white van to await detention without trial.

    but also good, show guts!

if cannot find locals to do, well, think of a way to get locals to do. not everything can be solved by hiring foreigners. if increase foreigners pay and they work, might as well pay it to locals......

Maybe, the Chinese who came in are provided with living quarters while the Malaysians are not. Or maybe the Malaysians are PR while the Chinese are only here on work pass? There are many thing unknown.

Temper are flying all over the place... but if we calmly sit down and wait for a while, maybe things will be clearer.

Not defending the SMRT or those that protest/ refuse to go to work/ on strike... just that we should wait wait abit and see.
The Malaysians typically live in MY and commute. The PRCs obviously can't so SMRT pays for their lodging and it comes out of their pay.

can we get locals to do it or not even with better pay? somehow i'm not too sure.
i know a guy who is a manager in a shipyard, he tried to get locals. even dangling pretty good pay but very few takers.
those that did come only lasted a week complaining job is dirty/smelly etc.

"Blow hot air"?? Wrong. Banks don't pay my losses in structured products. Nothing I can do? Wrong again. Go Speaker corner to protest and make yourself heard. So what happened? Rest is history. No use ? Talk to those folks. You think Speaker Corner is to sing Karaoke?

What if they unhappy and start thrashing things and riot? Who shall bear the responsibility for no preventive measures? Shows your small time mentality and inability to think of the big picture. You won't go far in life.

Red van is there just in case protesters expose themselves.

Van will block them from press photographers.

    Latest on the issue.

Press Release Detail - Ministry of Manpower

Remarks by Acting Minister for Manpower Mr Tan Chuan-Jin on the Illegal Strike by SMRT Bus Drivers

We are gathered here today to update you on the illegal strike that has taken place in this last 2 days.

Public transport services, like those provided by SMRT, are listed under “essential services” under the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act or CLTPA1. Strikes are illegal for workers in essential services, unless they give the employer 14 days’ notice of the intent to go on strike and comply with requirements of the notice .

By taking matters into their own hands the drivers have clearly crossed the line. These workers have disrupted public transport services and Singapore’s industrial harmony. The Government views these disruptions very seriously. We have zero tolerance for such unlawful action because disrupted essential services not only affect the workers in the industry, but also affect the daily life of all in the community.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) was informed this morning that over 60 SMRT bus drivers did not turn up for work today.

    Action to be taken

Police are currently investigating this illegal strike. There are rules and laws to follow, and we will let the investigations run their course.

Grievances are no excuse for holding illegal strike

All workers, local or foreign, need to be treated fairly in accordance to Singapore’s laws. All workers also need to be treated fairly because that is what is expected of good leadership and management i.e. responsibilities of any good employer.

MOM understands the bus drivers’ grievances. We expect SMRT to address the grievances raised. SMRT should also work with the union to resolve these issues.

However, regardless of their grievances, what the workers have done is illegal. There are right ways and wrong ways to handle these concerns. There are due processes to be followed. Just as we expect employers to follow the law, employees should similarly do so.

Taking the law into your own hands is wrong. This illegal strike is not acceptable and would be dealt with in accordance to the law.
