i see wildly fluctuating exposures from 1/50s to 1/500s, aperture from f/2 to 2.5...
were you using Av, Tv or M mode? too many photos, too time consuming to pick out any good shots. don't go firing a machinegun around. doesn't matter if a 1D can go 8fps, your 20D can go 5fps and my 10D can go 3fps - all we need is ONE shot from action to show. |

speaking of wildly fluctuating shots, photo #149 jumps down to 200mm, f/2.8, 1/80s, at ISO400.
pardon me for saying this - though i'm just having a hunch that you had 3 fast lenses 35, 135 f/2 and 70-200 f/2.8 - which should give pretty decent exposures and action shots - you have shown that you have not mastered your camera yet, and the basics of exposure. i believe i gave some advice to an earlier post, about my using iso1600, f/2.8, 1/160s and still getting underexposure at FIP last year - from the shots it seems somewhat the lights have improved (i was told about this, but i have yet to go to take a look), but your exposure "choices" have varied so much, that you can't possibly concentrate on getting action shots or just playing around with the camera. |

I am using AV all the time. The problem with FIP, that you always got inconsistent lighting even when you move 1 meter. And the left and right can have also different lighting. The tournament was in 3 days and there were 35 games to be covered (12 teams). I will probably will take out some of the pictures from the web, but will wait until after the team to check the pictures out.
One other thing is that when I used wide angle shoot, I can see inconsistent lighting on the left and right side since the light was not scattered evenly. That is the problem I was facing in the place. By the end of the tournament, I have end up with only 2 lenses to use: 85 f/1.8 & 135 f/2.0 . 70-200 f/2.8 is too slow (lighting is bad) even for ISO 1600, and ISO 3200 although is okay not acceptable on my standard. Also I have not yet done editing other than resizing.

Contrary to other comments, I think it's nice that you share many pictures on your gallery. I also think you have mastered your camera. Just ignore negative comments here at CS. I'm used to hearing such negative comments. They're just jealous. I bet they are not better than you. |

i've shot before at FIP, i know how bad the light can get, understanding that the management has to run the place with a profit in mind, which will determine what kind of lights that are installed. AF at f/2.8 is pretty tardy, at f/2, with twice the amount of light, it may improve just that bit.
i have yet to try shooting ice hockey as yet, so i can't guarantee what i'll come up with. but i do have a little experience in shooting similar invasional-territorial games. http://www.canoepolo.com/forum/showp...0&postcount=30 edward, in case you didn't know, the lower iso1600 noise is courtesy of the camera, not the person firing off the shutter, in addition to an appropriate exposure due to the lighting. another finicky thing about the lights that i last recall about FIP is the green-orangey lights. gives a massive headache each time. I've been following your comments on other pictures (Hangzhou fashion show, etc.), and I notice most your comments are negative. You always say that the picture is too ordinary, nothing special, bla bla.. But then I visited your gallery and I found your pictures are dull, poorly composed. They got no WOW factor. Sorry for the harsh comments, but please take it as a constructive one. ![]() |
