Haha 14 months is a long time. It's not like you bought a 5100 last month. Then you can be devastated

That's alright bro. Just think of those moments you have captured the past 14months, it wouldn't be possible if not for your D5100 right? Much like of our smart phones today, they upgraded every month LOL!

Was it anything special before? I don't think so. It's a DSLR like any other in that price class.

Full HD is very low resolution compared to a photo. Whoever told you that af-d lenses have worse video output than G lenses is a great conman

AF-D lens is non built-in SWM, but still able to works with screw driver motor on body.
But coating wise is made for film day an not as rich as G coating lenses and limited of performance as higher MP such as D800 and above, cause the IQ not as good like HD photo quality.

If when to G Lenses has built-in SWM on lens only, even non screw drive on body an still working on SWM.

The coating has newly design to suit new technology and more rich color with improved over the film camera.

But except some AF-G lens is without aperture ring and label as G and still work as screw drive.
The image quality as good, but still not meet to AF-S lens.

    Cheers!
    Question:

    AF-S 80-200 f/2.8D and AF-S 70-200 f/2.8G VR1, what is the new coating between them?

    What I knew is :

AF-S D still design for Film & DX sensor.

AF-S G VR1 still design for DX sensor and improved over the D version.

AF-S G VR2 is a real design for FX and added N coating.

If I'm not correct, may ask some Sifu to be pointed out.

    Cheers!

I see, so the AF-S 80-200 f/2.8D was a film sized lens (36mm) but was not suited for FX, only DX which the Nikon D1 was launched in 1999.

And the AF-S 70-200 f/2.8G VR1 was designed for DX but actually covers film sized sensors of 36mm. Nikon sure is stupid to design a FX lens but design it such that it's good only for DX and yet not make it AF-S 70-200 f/2.8G VR1 DX.

How is the AF-S VR2 a real design for FX compared to the AF-S VR1 which they both covers a sensor size of 36mm but if VR1 is only good for DX, then VR2 should be also good for DX also, am I right?

IIRC the only function of Nano coating is to reduce internal reflections of the lens. This helps to reduce lens flare and ghosting, as well as improve contrast. It is as simple as that. It does not improve resolution.

Nikon | Imaging Products | Behind the scenes - The Nano Crystal Coat

70-200vr1 is a FX lens. It shows some slight vignetting wide open but on a crop frame, the vignetting is not visible. This does not mean that the vr1 was designed for DX. It just simply means that the vr2 is better designed than the vr1. But both are designed to be used with FX cameras.

The 80-200 AF-S born in the film edge yes, but it performed beautifully on FX digital cameras also. So a lens designed for film doesn't automatically mean it will not perform well on a FX digital camera.

If you heard otherwise, it highly probably it is from an un-informed person or typical sales bull crap.

It was something special to me as it was my first DSLR. I even give it a name to it. Haha..
Been shooting over 17k shots and it never fails me though (not to mention my lens as well).
Not planning to upgrade anyway la... Just felt sad that my camera is being "antiqued" soon. Haha!!
Anyway my ultimate aim is always to go for Full Frame

Na..why isit antiqued. If you see things like that. then everything around you is antique already. New and better stuff will just keep rolling out..Its not unusual. Enjoy what you have and if u feels like..by all means. Go get it.

No worries. Even with a new replacement model out, it doesn't mean your camera will suddenly become much lesser of a tool. It will remain the same.

My 1st DSLR too. And have been producing wonderful pictures too. I feel for you about the camera becoming "antiqued". Will change to full frame cam eventually. But that means selling all my current lens

Same here. I have the DX kit and 55-200 lens which I'm selling it real soon. Currently poisoned to 28-75/2.8 from Tamron as I've been keep using it since I bought last July? I still have 50/1.8D but stick to my F80. Current plan is "aim for FX lens" LOL.

Anyway, how about shooting in low light for D5200. So far din see any examples yet
