Get off the bike, walk on the sandy beach, smell the fresh air and hear the waves splash...It's a great day today.

Good shot but a few pointers to note.

Beware your horizon, I suffer from this as well.
My opinion is that the DOF should include the railings as well.
Not to crop his shadow.
other that that it is a good shot.

The subject's line of view draws your eyes off the frame and wonder what he is looking at. It would be better if your caption hints at what he is looking at. Maybe cutting it short to "What a great day"

good points ortega. I also learn something from this thread. But as Hotspots will testify, the lighting at that point was horrid. Extreme backlight, and side light.

The guy was looking at the models

If I remember the time that I first had my f2.8 lens and discovered bokeh,
I made all my shost with shallow DOF and did not notice the background.

So I am just trying to correct this way of thinking, and if possible to think about composition befor he clicks the shutter.
Composition does include DOF and FOV and even stuff outside of the frame.

Learn from my mistakes.

my favourite places are Ketam Quarry, former Thian Hou Gong (now in Sengkang) and Chek Jawa ... Ketam Quarry is now closed for reafforestation, the old temple building has been demolished and Chek Jawa is not in a good state

good point. i agree wif u as the fence was probably not that "interesting" to include within the DOF.

I was actually referring more to the washed-out sea/sky that will be a patch of "white" if more shallow DOF was used because of the backlight.

for my learning, do you think it's ok to have a "white" background in bokeh when a viewer expects to see sky and water in this type of situation? I have this problem sometimes and usually end up throwing away the shot I feel the sky should be there, but the latitude just can't make it

No problem with the OT la...all part of the learning and discovery process

Thanks Ortega and Knoxknocks for the comments...very useful indeed.

I also realised the horizon was not flat and the shadow was cropped off, as mentioned by Ortega. And Knoxknocks was right too...it'd be really funny if I had included the subbject that the fella was looking at...the models

Actually I feel that the fence should be included in the DOF as that will create a sense of distance from the sea/sky.

If the "patch of White" is not pure white (No Data) I think that it is OK if the subject is cropped tight and emphasis is not on the background.
The photographer's job is to make the most of the given situation.

hmmm ... very good advice from ortega, looking back i think a portrait format instead of the landscape format will bring out the subject better
