Default Loneliness at Sea

Shot this at Tg. Aru beach, Sabah, two weeks ago. One of my favorite (if not the favorite) pictures from the visit. Comments welcome.

Digital? Crop a pana format ... there's just too much foreground that's distracting and see if you can use curves to lighten the whole scene a little...

Thanks for all your comment! Now, let me talk a bit about it. First of all, this is an experimentation with graphic minimalism. I don't think I'll crop it any more since I always intended the boat to be small in the pic. Do you think the waves in the foreground are too distracting?

Ok, let me elaborate more (i was rushing to school just now). I wanted to depict the isolation and dreariness of being far out at sea, hence the large amount of foreground and the low contrast. Anymore comments guys?

Panoramic view is better, but do check on the horizon. Don't divide the photo into 2 with the horizon.

it's called "breaking the horizon" in terms of visual composition

Check out Kenya Hara's work on his pano series for MUJI, Japan for examples of breaking the horizon http://www.dnp.co.jp/gallery/artist/hara/hara.html

Thks SniperD, I do appreciate your help! I had considered the pano format before, but I decided against it because I found the large foreground reinforces the theme of isolation in the vast ocean I was trying to imbue.

Maybe so, but visually it is distracting, the subject (the ship) is no longer the focus point, so the picture becomes a vast ocean with a boat, instead of a lonely boat in a vast ocean.

Maybe if the vast ocean is burned in and the subject is highlighted then your composition should work, but as of this image the pano works better.
Just my toughts, I hope it helps.

Cheers

both versions look good, but i'll only comment on the original pix since the pano version is derived from that.

i like the concept and the feel of the vast ocean with a tiny boat as a small part of it. the amount of space the ocean takes up does grab your attention initially, but my eyes will eventually be drawn to the boat. and that will complete the feeling of how tiny, insignificant and lonely the boat is in relation to the option.
