Thread: Drying silica gel in microwave oven, oven still safe for food?

Default Drying silica gel in microwave oven, oven still safe for food?

    Hi all,

For the gentlemen here still using silica gel, does drying it in the microwave oven leave behind any residual chemicals in the oven which may get into whatever food that is reheated in the same oven later?

    Just curious...

    Thanks.

Well I used to run to the 7-11 store near my place and use their microwave when the staffs were not looking. No mass food poisoning or lowered life expectancy yet :P

Just buy a small electrical dry cab and all your worries of "poisoning" are over.

why don't just get a dry cabinet and move on,
instead of spending time and efforts on all these petty things?

than how are you going to put all your energy on "getting the big pictures"?

You have two paths young Padawan

    1) spend 100+ dollars buying a 1000W microwave oven just to microwave your silica gels once every few weeks, not even using it to cook your food and taking up a shitload of space in the kitchen. 1-2 years warranty. Cannot show off gears every 2 weeks microwaving the gels like a chore. Risk fungus when you forget to microwave the gels. Risk poisoning if u accidentally cook with it. Say you microwave for 1 minute every 2 weeks. (1kW x 1/60 x number of weeks in a month x fluctuating energy bill x number of years you'll keep it for) +cost of oven = $$$$$$
    Or about $200++ per year

    2) spend $100+ on a decent dry cabi. Takes up a small space at your bedside/wardrobe/below your TV. Allows you to show off your gears. Wattage is about 2-5W only. (0.002x24x365xrate of electrical bills) Works out to about $5 a year. 5 year warranty. sit back and enjoy looking like your equipments the way you're supposed to, like a Baus who have just discovered a life hack.

    Up to you to decide

haha thanks guys for sharing your secrets!

My old man is still using those silica beads, and i'm kind of concerned about putting my food into that same oven after that.

Glad to hear there's no food poisoning yet!

Personally I will not take the risk to dry using microwave...side effects need to be medically and scientifically proven. No news does not mean good news.

Just get a dry cabinet. Or if u insist on using silica just buy a new bottle. Some $ simply not worth it.

Just read up about the blue indicator, it's Cobalt(II)Chloride.
Check the details on right hand side, under 'Hazards'. The rest is your call

Cobalt(II) Chloride isn't an entirely new compound. Most of use definitely worked with it fairly closely during the lab lessons back in secondary school. Nothing more than washing your hands after handling the chemicals is needed.

I don't think there is anything wrong with microwaving it. But then again, research into the use of microwave for cooking has be scant, what more of the hazards of microwaving silica gel.

no not safe. used silical gel will oxidise and emit toxic when bake.
