Default Olympus E-PL5 Review with images

Olympus Imaging passed an E-PL5 with the latest firmware firmware thats very near to the release version to CLubsnap on Friday .

Earlier, we have had the non-release set but could not do much with it because the latest firmware was not loaded yet.

Specs can be found in the M4/3 section of this forum, cut and pasted it below

    Main Features:

    1. FAST AF for instantaneous autofocusing and Touch AF Shutter on the Live View screen let users experiment with a whole new way of shooting

    2. 16.05-megapixel Live MOS Sensor and TruePic VI image processing engine for high image quality equivalent to the OLYMPUS OM-D E-M5 in a compact, lightweight body

    3. 12 Art Filters including a new “Water Colour” filter supported by Variations and Art Effects for even more creative artistic expression capabilities

    Other Features:

OLYMPUS Image Share: Take pictures with Flash Air card and send them to a smartphone via WiFi for posting pictures with Social Networking Service (SNS) app
 Improved resolution and noise at ISO12800
 New 16.05-megapixel Live MOS Sensor, TruePic VI image processor and Fine Detail technology for improved resolution and noise
 Self-portrait monitor for best composition of background scenery and self
 Tilt monitor for taking pictures from various angle (65° for high angle shots to 90° for low angle shots)
 Custom self-timer function for posing before taking pictures in self-portrait monitor
 High speed continuous shooting (8 fps with High Speed Sequential Shoot; 3.5 fps with 3D Tracking AF)
 Art Fade feature allows Art Filters to be gradually changed while shooting movies
 Movie tele-converter enables 4x magnification in full HD quality
 Able to download background music to be during slide show playback

    First Impressions:

    1. this is the SMALLEST E-PL camera from Olympus yet
    2. the flip LCD screen is similar to the one on the OMD ... and MORE ... it now goes ALL the way up enabling easier self-portraits AND it flips DOWN further than the OMD's LCD allowing for 'true' overhead shooting
    3. controls and user interface is similar to earlier E-PLs and the OMD's so existing users will find it a breeze to operate
    4. No pop-up flash but the bundle comes packaged with a small external shoe-mounted flash unit .... not alot of juice but GREAT as fill-in lighting

How compact is this little giant ?

Placed it on top of 3 Golden Village movie ticket stubs

Next to a regular SD memory card ...

    LCD flipped down

Of course, with the M4/3 mount, the E-PL5 is able to accept lenses from other major M4/3 system manufacturers .... I've paired it below with the new Panasonic 35-100 f2.8 zoom ..... COMBINED Body/Lens outfit weight below is barely half of my Canon 1Ds (BODY only )

And this is with the Lens Hood ON

Got a strange feeling that 70-200 tele zoom photography is going to see a serious entry by M4/3 systems with a fast lens and a high-fps and fast AF body. (I shudder to imagine what a M4/3 300mm (600mm equiv in 36mm format) paired with a small body will look like; you could likely fit it into a regular school backpack)

One other comment : WITHOUT the removable grip , kool, thin and slim is very obvious (better carry it with the neck strap well secured if you want to use it without the grip)

Got diverted and shot around the esplanade this afternoon

First thing was to test Tracking AF .... the little box was tracking moving subjects with a good lock-on and still kept AF pretty accurate .... the only feedback is that when a NEARER new-subject came between the main subject and the camera .... the tracking changed subjects (from original subject to new-subject that wandered across the tracking patch,) a couple of times. But if there is NOTHING between the camera and the tracked subject, the tracking AF works very well

Just be careful when using Tracking AF with LONG focal lengths .... when subject to camera at a distance that is LESS than the len's specified minimal focusing distance , subject is of course blurred or the Tracking AF loses lock-on of subject. Otherwise Tracking AF is very fast

A bicycle should be faster than a little kid so ....

Spent the rest of the time testing out the touch-screen AF+shutter-release ..... didnt use a stopwatch but it did 3 things VERY QUICKLY .... meter, AF and release shutter button .... all this in almost an instant

Subjects were all members of the public and not known to me ..... with touch-screen shutter, I could basically walk right up to the subject and shoot .... while leaving the shutter button well clear and untouched

(AND must mention that the Spot Meter is very accurate too given the very small metering patch)

Saw a few strong folks out for a walk and a workout with shoulder weights ..... I was too lazy ..... everything was well below 1kg .....
(430+grams for EEPL5 body with the kit zoom AND battery)
(and about 700+grams for the EPL5 body + the Panasonic 35-100/2.8 zoom AND battery)

I pass the arrow over to Dream Merchant next for his perspective of the E-PL5
