don't get the DG lens introduction, are they re releasing existing lens combos (like 50-500 under the DG category?)

I think they do not have the means or resources to update physically every single lens (10 here) with extra elements or coating. Probably they just update the firmware/chip in their 10 lens and make sure they work in the most current DSLR from Nikon, Canon and their Sigma.
