But in the first place, why is there a need for FX?

Need the WA lens, at 14mm?

Need for crazy high ISO like 6400 to shoot in the dark?

Need for 36Mp to print huge 3meter wide?

IMO, a D3100 is good enough for entry level shooter.

Actually, hard to do FX that is small, light and affordable. We need larger sensor, larger mirror and shutter, larger VF and pentaprism which translate into heavier and bigger camera.

This scenario is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual people is purely coincidental.

Have! No motordrive, no video. It is DEFINITELY entry level FX! It's called an FM2 and it can be yours for a princely sum of S$250!!!!!!!!!

I used to want full frame like you. Till I took a catchlights to the knee.

Now I only want a rolleiflex TLR, Film scanner, and many many films

I want an entry level BMW, although I will only drive at 50 kmh. At Kia price.

An entry level Nike at Bata price.

An entry level iphone at Nokia 3100 price.

An entry level ipad at $100.

An entry level PS3 at $80.

But I like entry level stuff....

But seriously.... remember the days of D1? Remember we used to pay $1500 for a 2MP Casio digicam?

Plus today's DX camera are so wonderful (didn't stop me from getting that H-Man FX, though), but FX is anything but entry level.

Just like the BMW 3.20 or something like that is entry level BMW, D600 is entry level FX, for today. Tomorrow the economics may be different, so if you want entry level at $1500, wait a while, maybe a long while. 'cause when the price of old technology goes down, no one wants them and so we will keep moving. Quite obviously Nikon doesn't think selling a 12MP FX camera is a wise commercial decision...

Four years back I said to my wife (aka Home and Finance Minister) that for the next iteration the price of FX will drop to the price of DX, but not at DX entry level, which has come true. The price of D600 is at the level of D300 at introduction. And D600 is a better image maker than D3x, which was like $12k when introduced. What is there to complain?

Just look at computers, the price stayed more or less constant but machine got better. Entry level stayed the same price, more or less, 'cause the previous entry level stuff that should get even cheaper got eliminated.

The illustration of $300, $400, $500 vs $400, $500, $600 missed one big point. If you make Good at $600, Better at $700, and Best at $800, will you sell them at $400, $500 and $600 respectively? I don't think so.

Yes please go buy the entry level digital MF... I don't remember but the price was anything but entry level.

And I like the earlier thread that says D100 for $3.6k, D600 is entry level to him. I echo that, heck D800 (which I bought) was a bargain!

Ha ha talk about entry FX body, yesterday I when to collected my D600, I was dunno how happy to be paid of $2,900 for small body + FF DSLR.

The D600 had bring back home and thinking it is what I'd paid for $2.9k to buying FF camera at it price?

Ya it is true cause the price is still cheaper than passed few years ago for when the new D700 launched price for over $3.2k++ and getting the lowered specs.

Anything is just to be balance yourself and depend as what you want and what's your shoot.

If you really want the cheaper body can be go for the 1st in Nikon entry level line-up for D3200 & Kit lens and also play with the pop up flash only.

    Cheers!

thanks but not sure what u are trying to articulate by suggesting that manufacturing cost is more than $300/400/500 used in the analogy

as for the digital MF, we need to shift our perspective a little away from dslr. compared to the offerings by hasselblad, phaseone, etc, the 645D @ S$12k + can be regarded as "entry level", imho.

in the near future, DX will be incorporated into FX cameras. oops, it has already being done.

Nikon will no longer make DX cameras and the basic DX models like D3200 of today will be the basic models of FX in the near future.

DX is but a temporary solution as the technology was still new and not that widely affordable around 1 decade ago.

photographers spending too much time thinking and talking about cameras, don't you think is a little strange?

do you ever see carpenters sitting at the coffee shop debating which is a better hammer, or best to use saw with how many saw teeth per inch?

    but that is actually the
manufactures want you people to think and to do, putting the tools before the craft, they are making the product circle shorter and shorter, so they able to sell more products and faster.

you're right and I am guilty as convicted.

consumerism is very addictive once we start chasing for the latest technology, often forgetting what we really need for our hobbyist requirements is just a basic tool.

gears and equipment are the main elements of photography, without which, there is no photography.

so, to chit chat and talk about gears and equipment is definitely valid and part of the grand picture. kekekekeke
