Default Singapore Ice Hockey

I need your comment on pictures I took on ice hockey. Lighting quite bad so most of the time use IS 800 & 1600. I think I progress a bit afterward (look later pictures) but still far from perfect. And since the sports are fast, it was more challenging. I am using 20D but wish to have 1DII.

Hope to get constructive critisism

70-200L 2.8

You need to edit them down, there are just too many pictures in there!

From what I've seen, I don't think there's much that a 1DII would have helped with. Be happy with the 20D you have and learn how to use that until you really find the need to upgrade, not just because you think it might be better than what you have now.

Thanks for your comment. I put all down at this moment as it is requested by member of the hockey team. I will trim down later to take the best.

The problem that I have though since it is a fast sport, I think autofocus is not fast enough for 20D, but although I found some of them are quite okay.

You need to shoot with primes indoors.
you will be surprised what the humble 50mm 1.8 can do.
Single player shots are usually boring unless he is a super star.
Have 2 challenging for the puck.
Usually for sports, no ball no go. (shutter, pucks etc.. )
Need an extra hand? Havent shots sports in a while and this sounds interesting. I have shot soccer and hockey with the 10d, its just the timing.
5fps is fast enough.

I have found the best lens used was 135L 2.0 . I do have 50 1.4 & 85 1.8 and I will try it. There will be a big tournament in the end of Feb and the organizer wanted me to take pictures of the tournament. There will be teams from Europe and other asian countries that will come. Interested to join?

One more thing, I use Jpeg and did some post processing but a simple one as there are too many pictures. Currently I am trying to set an action in pthotoshoot for batch processing. In the end I did crop the pictures.

ice hockey is the fastest ball/puck game on earth. the puck travels up to 80km/h at times. so, its no point using ur cam like a MG and hoping for the best.

split second triggers and knowing the game will help in determining if you got a photo or not. primes are required if you want to shoot in those dimly lit ice rinks in sg. 135mm is a good choice, but most of the time, i think 85mm will suffice as it is close enough for all the action.

These pics are taken from inline hockey, which is similiar to ice hockey, and the only difference is that it is played with inline skates. The speed is the same...

hey javaman don't mind if i grab some of the pics of myself off your website.
dont complain i have been shooting the even for past 3 years with first a sony 717 then 828!!! your setup is already very darn good compared to what i have ...

mervin: inline hockey is a lot easier since its outdoor with the sun even my camera can handle the quick shutter speeds. the lighting at fuji ice palace is really bad

Hi Jagr,

No problem....

There will be a game this thursday, and if you want to check whether you can shoot, please pm me and I will try to schedule that you can come along.

Jagr, sure you can download the picture. I also have given Anthony the full size if you prefer to have them.

hi javaman dont mind i say but i find the team pictures a bit not sharp, maybe due to the post processing??

my advice for the coming tournament is if you are going to print team pictures, you can do so at the kodak photo shop at jurong east mrt. they can give a good rate and willing to stay open late because you will probably end the tournament on sat around 9pm and taking last minute orders. normally its a mad rush printing last minute orders and dupping CDs of all the photos in the tournament on sat after the tournament ends so good luck!

I did also noticed that the team pics are not sharp due to wrong configuration that i set. For the next team shoot, I will use monopod with better aperture setting.

i found this link: http://home.comcast.net/~mwittphotog...h/FrameSet.htm

this guy uses canon 70-200 f4 for it...i think, he managed to get good shots due to good indoor light maybe.

hi guys, I am also interested in going down for this shoot, as i do have an interest for ice hockey and roller hockey.

I will be using a D100 to shoot the event, hehe, so i don't think i can push ISO 1600 without some serious noise!!! Anyhow, i will see what I can shoot with. If flash advisable in these conditions?? or will it make the lighting unnatural??

for one thing i know, with the low light levels at FIP, you'd do better not to use flash for two good reasons.

1. distraction.
2. sporadic properly exposed/underexposed shots, since your flash definitely can't fire that fast enough. that's using bounce flash off the metallic silvery ceiling. no direct flash, please!

that gallery from the syracuse match looked more like a brawl instead of a match. hmm.

no doubt it will be hard to shoot at FIP. btw, i tried a year before, shooting iso1600, f/2.8, 1/160s - and all i get is still at least 1/2 to 1 stop underexposure.

Hi Sehsuan,

Recently, I am trying out AI Focus and AI Servo quite a lot in recent events. The main problem is sometimes it 'misfocuses' especially on my 70-200mm f4. Even when the subject was stationary and it kept focusing on the wall behind.

Is there something to do with back/front focusing prob? Or maybe some strong spotlights which are around to cause confusion to the focusing? Perhaps if you can give me advice?
