d3s has a louder solid 'clack' sound. the newer cameras shutter sound are quite 'polite'.

I love the muscular d800 sound! Pity doesn't have the quiet shutter mode unlike 5d3 for more discreet shooting situations.

If the menu options is similar to D7000, then it doesn't have it.

    D700, D800, D3, D3s, D4 all have it

Have quiet mode. Only not like 5d3 as silent mode.

    Quiet Mode

Unlike the excellent, quiet, fast and very usable Silent mode of the Canon 5D Mark III, the Quiet mode of the D800 is useless.

The D800's Quiet mode, selected with the top Advance mode dial, is slow, blanks out the finder for a second after you shoot, and isn't any quieter than the regular mode anyway.

The D800's Quiet mode isn't very smart either: it mutes the stupid beeps if for some unknown reason you have them turned on in the menu, but it isn't smart enough to turn off the AF assist light.

While the 5D Mark III's mode is great, all the D800's quiet mode does is annoy you, and it's just as noisy.

D3100 also has it. Even my older D2X also has that.

Yes thanks for helping to clarify... i should have said that the d800 "quiet" mode is not as effective as the 5d3

Looks like we have quite a few fans of shutter sound here!

Actually I find the entry level Nikon bodies already have quite discreet sounding shutter...personally d90 shutter sounds quite "polite" (as one other forumer mentioned earlier)

Hi, how does the front (lens mount area) of the D600 feels like? i shoot landscape and long exposures often thus will be mounting the 14-24 f2.8 on it with tripod for long period of time. Can the body actually support the weight of the lens since the front is not alloy like the D800?
