Default Sri Lanka part 1 - Colombo Streetshots

Just came back from a field study in Sri Lanka, sharing some shots ...

1.

2.

3.

1,2,3 - Petteha is the busiest marketplace of Colombo, it is just next to the relatively new sea port (container port system totally revolutionarised the trading system of Colombo in last 15 years, bringing in greater volumes at higher speed)

4.

bus is the cheapest mode of transport and usually packed to the brim during peak hours, this is of course off peak hour, if not i would not be able to take a shot.

5.

despite their friendliness, the locals seem extremely quiet on the bus (in fact the bunch of us Singaporeans were so excited and rather noisy that we attracted quite abit of attention for a while ... think they were very curious with us taking the bus instead of the bajaj, the local 'taxi')

Photoshop my friend, use it for image #1 and #2, I like #4 best, there is a sense of quite and deep thot. It might have been better if the shutter speed was slower to capture the movement of the road outside. Cheers

6.

religious statues belonging to Sinhalese Buddhists and are found frequently along the streets ... the local Tamil Catholics also like to erect statues depicting stories from the Holy Bible

7.

Muslims (mainly of Arab and Malay descent) going to the morning prayers on Haj Holiday (Hari Raya Haji in Singapore)

8.

some slum settlement along the canal ... a rather common sight, especially around Slave Island (our main area of urban study ... so tons of record pictures from this place but almost nothing nice to share ... ooops)

9.

a Muslim eatery displaying the breakfast for the day

10.

a vendor frying peanuts with sand ... something like how we fry the chestnuts with small stones in Singapore

no problem! i think it's because i underexposed most of my shots ... will push up the curve abit here and there ... the lighting condition in Sri Lanka is strangely tricky, when the sun comes out everything just 'burst'

11.

a town outside Colombo administrative region but within 'greater Colombo' ... many 'sub-towns' were created along major highways leading in and out of Colombo as the city gets more and more congested over the years.

12.

a vendor selling lottery tickets

13.

sunset along a street leading to the seaside ... activities within the main city dwindle significantly after sunset, with most shops closing after 7.30pm, except the restaurants and eateries.

I'm a sucker for silhouette shots, so I'll go for 6 and 7. Perhaps framing could be improved a little. Generally the pics are indeed slightly underexposed.

hmmm ... got abit of time, post processed the first 2 pictures again, here's how they look ...

btw ortega must say you are very skillful, i was abit 'lost' with these 2 pictures (think too absorbed with the dusty glass), so PSed according to your take on them, nice job you did thanks!

#6 had quite a percentage of luck in it, the lighting was changing rapidly during sunrise and i was desperately trying to meter correctly so as not to blow the sky ... still abit underexposed overall ... but i like pictures that are slightly under anyway, personal preference, hehe

#13 was PSed, the original is way under to preserve the sky colours ... i have a take of this on film but the scanning isn't very good, the digital scan quite noisy, but can see that film has really very wide range

I actually wanted to PS #13 but them I could not find anything to do!
So, well done!

BTW #7 was not a simple adjustment of tone or curves, had to do some d&b to get the right tone, so good luck!
