It's common for a variable ND filter (ND fader) to have cross vignetting.

Using the following setup, apparently you'll not get Banding:

Using Crossed Polarizers for a Variable ND Filter | digital imageMaker international

I bought a cheap fader from ebay. I do not get such bad vignetting.

There are markings on the filters if i am not wrong. mine is green l if I go beyond the the indicated marking it will cause the cross vignetting (not visible when you look through your viewfinder but the image will eventually capture it). The only main issue of my variable nd filter is that it has a warm tone (not a big issue if you are shooting digital)
