Olympics promotes world peace by channelling warring energy into competing.

She is not wrong. Money is finite. Money can always justifiably spent in many other ways that will otherwise benefit the general public.

But you cannot put a price on the intangibles of national legacy and pride either.

Seeing how the youth Olympics went, I can't imagine Singapore handling the budget of the actual Olympics

    She mentioned Munich.
After WW2 in 1945, only the top Nazi elite infamous for serious crimes were judged at Nuremberg. They killed 6 million Jews. Many middle and lower echelon Nazis remained in the German fabric and were allowed to re-integrate into everyday life as Germany rebuilt. By 1972, many past-Nazis would have risen to high posts in the public and private sectors of the German state. Watch the TV documentary of the Munich massacre. The German state apparatus made so many bungles in the rescue operations and the terrorists were able to kill the Israeli athlete hostages. It is hard to believe that this was not done on purpose. Maybe they still hate the Jews.

A friend remarked during a kopi session when this issue came up: "So where was she when Singapore bidded and then hosted the YOG?"

    Interesting question...

    Agree fully!
UK is experiencing one of its worst recession so u got to wonder is it justifiable to spend so much money on the Olympics?
And the reason why Greece is in such deep economic **** is partly cos they over spent when they were the host for the 2004 Olympics, they never recovered from that.
N u got to wonder is it worth it when SG spent $387 million for the YOG? Where are the so called benefits now? Does anybody even remember it?

    She has a point.

But the same argument can be made for many things, including development of iPhone, invention of plasma TVs, or even production of cameras. All these are done collectively by the human race and have no impact on human welfare either.

She is right about the correct use of large sums of money. It is better spent improving the life of common folks.

Her opinion is published because she is somebody's daughter. And not because her views are especially high standard or something that nobody else can think of.
If some ordinary person had made exactly the same remarks, no one would have bothered to take notice and definitely not publish in a newspaper.
That is how the real Asia operates.

Singapore is especially barren in current local born world class sporting talent. We got none. 0

Every Singaporean looked at what happened to Tan Howe Liang and learnt a bitter lesson from it. So they know sports is not a priority.

Other countries like Jamaica can produce sprint stars and sweep the 200m sprint in 1-2-3 fashion.
Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Somalia (went to run for UK) can produce gold medal runners.
They got a reason to go to the Oly. Not us.

After the 2 weeks, Oly fever is over and life returns to normal. Who cares after that?

Actually Singapore has won the gold in the most important non-Oly event of all. That is to take care of your people and make sure they got food to eat, a roof over their heads and a safe place to live.

Cameras do have an impact on human welfare and happiness. We use cameras to capture our happy, inspired, beautiful or memorable moments and the pictures help us to relive those happy moments.

If u put it that way, then ask urself this question.
Has human inventions really made our lives better or worse?

Uh huh, there are loads of inventions which could arguably be perceived as not making the life of collective humanity better.

Like computers, sure, they've improved the lives of people in countries that actually have them. You can develop all the technology you want, but to a sweatshop kid it probably means that he just has to work harder with the same pay since the Internet has made the convenience of purchasing things better and thus raised the demand for whatever he produces.

If the Olympics serves as entertainment value, it actually improves someone's life. Quite a lot of "someones" actually. It's just not applicable to "humanity" as a whole. So it does depend on what part of humanity you are looking at, whether you're talking about Olympics or inventions.

Well, for Singaporeans that can actually afford cameras la, I agree with you. That's why we take up photography as a hobby, no?
