Default Want to Borrow: Nikon 24-120 AFS VR for 5 hours @ Gombak

Hi, I'm helping a friend cover an event on her final year project. The situation doesn't allow use of flash. Therefore I've to up to ISO to unaceptable levels, the grain in the image and the softness makes it less than desirable. I'm using a D70 and it's not possible to use a tripod in that enclose area.

I'm wondering if anyone is willing to lend me the above mentioned lens for around 3-5 hours (from 12pm onwards). I'll be around the are close to the MRT station.

Please? Any kind soul out there can help? I can't afford to rent a lens nor give any deposit of any sort except my 11B...

The lighting can get me 1/60 with F8 and ISO 1600 or some times ISO 1000. And at that ISO, it's way too high..

I'm hoping to stay at ISO 800 and below.

What sort of event? I think you will need the shutter speed, usually anything below 1/100 is already pushing it too much for events....so VR may not help here.

I think its better to use a high iso film around iso400-1600 than to use the d70 at such iso settings... after all, most film don't have as much grain as compared to the noise of CCDs at high iso.

then maybe using the 24-120VR AFS would help.

hope this helps. cheers

It's some activity involving kids... bundles of energy that never seems to stop moving. Using film is not really an option since I'm not paid, in anyway, by cash. Prolly get a free lunch and/or tea break from her and that's it. I'm doing this for the experience.

Maybe I should just bring my tripod along. A ball head would really help. Maybe I should start a "want to borrow: Tripod with ball head"

Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

VR is NOT SUITABLE for taking pictures of moving kids. All you get is lots of blur!

Your only option is either flash (by the way, why can't you use flash?) or you get a lens with big aperture (such as a f1.4).

They do gather at tables to do some handicraft 70% of the time and that's where I get my shots. Can't move too close or I'll distract em, can't stay too far or handshake becomes an issue.

Why not a D2H? ISO1600 is pretty clean too.

Ah-duh.

Suggest something more useful. You expect somebody to pick up a body that he has never used before to go and cover an event without understanding the equipment is pure madness.

Nerd: Much as I'd love to help, but my 24-120VR has departed my cabinet in Oct last year, hope you find a kind soul willing to loan you. My advise is to use a 50 f/1.8, it should tide you through the shoots.

However, I don't see why flash cannot be used in your case, but it's just me.

To all who replied, thanks for your offers and suggestions.

I took the plunge and got a 70-200 AFS VR and covered the event without a hitch.... NOT...

I used my father's AIS 35mm F2 Micro and uh.... manage throuhout with 1/125

espn, flash cannot be used because it's.. uh.. distracting and my friend specifically request that I do not use it. I thank you for your advice and your offer to loan your lens to me if you have it in the first place.

David, thanks for the offer, but the event is finished.
