Canon PhotoMarathon 2012
Official Press Release received today
Singapore, 16 October 2012 – The annual Canon PhotoMarathon is back with a bigger bang this year, with a record-breaking number of participants expected in the highly-anticipated competition, up from 2,078 in 2011. This year’s event, Canon PhotoMarathon X, is the tenth edition of the largest photo competition in the region and promises participants lots of exciting prizes and a never-seen-before Celebrity Challenge. The event will see the local photography community participating in the Singapore leg on 3 November at Marina Bay Sands. The Canon PhotoMarathon is also held in various countries in Asia including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
“Canon PhotoMarathon X marks our 10th Canon PhotoMarathon in Singapore. The growing local interest in photography is clear; over the past decade, we’ve not only seen an increasing number of participants, but also a significant improvement in the quality of the photos submitted. I believe the Canon PhotoMarathon will continue to be an event that photographers of all levels come together and have lots of fun while learning from one another and sharpening their photography skills,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director
and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore.
Extending our reach to the community
Canon is reaching out to the community and engaging them through photography and special activities that are in line with Canon’s corporate philosophy of kyosei, which means living and working together for the common good.
This year, together with YMCA of Singapore, Canon has invited 30 participants from the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) Tanglin School and APSN Centre for Adults to participate in this year’s event, more than double of last year’s 13. This is part of Canon’s Corporate Social Responsibility effort, the Canon Photography Exchange Programme, which leverages Canon’s expertise in digital imaging to encourage the intellectually-disabled to explore their creativity and imagination through photography.
In addition, there will be sign language interpreters on site to assist hearing-impaired participants, similar to last year.
The Canon PhotoMarathon X will also feature a new Celebrity Challenge. Under this challenge, local celebrities will comp
ete against each other based on one of the three themes used in the competition. Canon will be donating S$5,000 to the winning celebrity’s charity of choice.
For the first time this year, the public got their chance to vote for their favorite design of the competition T-shirt, with close to 1,000 votes received. This was done through the Facebook app, We want your Vote, where the public could select one out of the five designs available for voting from 22 August to 18 September. The most popular T-shirt design will be unveiled on competition day with participants given T-shirts of the winning design.
The PhotoMarathon Contest Mechanics
The Canon PhotoMarathon consists of three segments in which participants are required to create images according to the assigned themes which will be released one after another during the 1-day competition. Participants have a few hours to submit their best interpretation of the assigned theme before the next theme is released. In fact, the excitement to create photos “on-the-spot” under the pressure of time is one of the key reasons of many returning participants. The Canon PhotoMarathon will kick off at 9a.m. and is expected to last nine hours, culminating with the announcement of the winners at the end of the day.
Prizes fit for accomplished photographers
Participants of the Canon PhotoMarathon X can look forward to winning a stable of attractive prizes this year. The Best of Show from each of the two categories — Open and Student — will win the grand prize which comprises an eight-day expenses paid photo clinic to Hungary. This photo clinic will be led by professional photographer, Triston Yeo, recognised as one of the “Best Photographers of the Decade” by Asian Geographic magazine. The chosen destination, Hungary, one of Europe's oldest countries, is a treasure trove of Jewish heritage and fascinating history, where 2000 year old Roman ruins lie alongside 400-year-old Turkish monuments. With its vibrant culture, photographers are certain to be excited by the dynamic scenes they can capture.
Other prize winners will walk away with attractive Canon products such as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon EOS 650D digital SLRs, among others.
