Anyway D5100 is a very very capable camera, and I am sure you would have loads of fun with it.
Welcome partner! Im D5100 user too! Manual focusing is quite easy if u keep practising.

D5100 as well as many other cameras come with a kit lens for a reason. It covers the range that many people will need / use during their early stages. Use this and learn from there. Resist the urge to upgrade because it's "only" a kit lens. Although a simple one, the lens can deliver good pictures. There are other areas to worry more, many of them are located behind the viewfinder

Hi TS. Is great to see another person passionate in landscape photography. When I first started out in photography 2 years ago, I'm also into landscape photography. Of cos, all Dslr camera are able to take good landscape pictures. Forget about d3100 or d3200 which doesn't have built in motor. I would recommend getting Nikon d90 to start with. This camera has a built in auto focus motor, this gives you a wider range of lens to choose from if you want to get additional lens next time ( I'm sure you will). I think it cost around 1.2k which is very near to your budget. You can also consider getting a 2nd hand one which cost ard $800-$900. I hopes that help.

Agree with the seniors here... about size and weight

I just came back from a two weeks trip from S Korea yday.. I bought quite a few things for this trip and gear up my 60D, even went to buy an amour cover to make it look less attractive.... As i was doing my last bit of packing i saw my whole set of gear waiting to be packed in and i was in dismay as i thought of my return journey and the carrying i need to do when i come back with all the face shop products etc im going to buy and the fact that i am bringing about 9kg of clothes and essential items... exclude my bulky laptop and camera plus charger which was additional 7kg or so...

Guess what, i ditch my 60D, my Tamron 18-270 and speedlite, i took along my sister Canon 1100D with 18-55mm lens plus a 50mm f1.8... we bought the 1100D after i bought my 60D due to its price and weight most imptly.. plus its a decent dslr for the price bought it with the purpose in mind of travelling light as this was a cultural, sightseeing and shopping trip more than a photo trip so the 1100D came in handy.. for the 9 days i didnt even use the 50mm f1.8 the 18-55mm was good enuff for me... and the weight of the 1100D was just nice, i might have died halfway with a 60D

my older sister who has a 600D ditch it and took along her S95...

weight and size is a factor when you travel, so do take into consideration... as such im now considering a m 4/3 or mirrorless camera now... probably the Sony Nex or New Canon EOS M, the Panasonic GF series or the Olympus Pen... Now doing research, maybe will reward myself next yr... if got money i sure look at the OMD, x100 etc... no budget hahaha

do consider the size and weight...

Haha! On holidays with shopping, even with just my 550D & 18-135 kit in a relatively small Crumpler bag, it is sometimes already one bag too many. Good thing for mine, the camera/lens is lightweight. Weight & no. of bags is an issue, especially on city hoppers & budget flights :-)

well... for travelling, I took only my EPL1 in the past, now my OMD. It is good enough, even when I bring along two or three lenses (one attached to the camera) I still don't feel the bulk as compared to my 7D with just 1 lens.

Try sony's system. The a65 and a77 produce very nice colours and high dynamic range.

Guys lay off the inexperienced newbie who has obviously never handled a DSLR before. This IS a public forum for photography related questions right?

Trinex: A few things I can recommend: (1) Do a quick Google search on landscape photographers portfolios. See what camera they're using and whether you like the photos it produces (2) Go down to the camera shops at Funan and Courts and get a 'feel' for the size and handling of the DSLR, see if you like the camera and how to operate it (3) Ignore all comments from holier-than-thou people who tout one brand above all others or who disparage certain camera brands. There's no such thing as the perfect camera, every system has its pros and cons.

For me I'm using Olympus Micro 4/3, been using this system for years mainly because I like Olympus colors, especially for landscapes, and also because of its compact size which for me is important because I hike with my camera and a full sized DSLR (body + lens + tripod, etc) would kill me when hiking across a mountain

I second that. I used to have Pentax K5 and then switching to Canon 7D before settling happily into OMD. I just bring omd with 4-5 lens into small Crumpler backpack daily and I feel lighter than carrying bulky sale in bigger bag with tripod and walked like big human turtle on street.

The E510 is a very very capable camera, you should have lots of fun with it. I would suggest the next purchase

    1) Remote control (can get very very cheaply from ebay, sometime not more than S$20)
    2) ND filter (not necessary, but very good to have).

And next time we can go shoot some landscape

Wow, E510!!! Used to have E410, first DSLR for almost 3 years, love it. On one hand, Oly 43 dslr user base in dwindling, the other hand, you can pick up some really good deals should you decide to buy some other 43 lenses! For starter the kit 14-42 is a really good lens (better than the m43 versions), and the 40-150 telephoto if you want to explore longer focal length, 40-150 can be an excellent portrait lens too!

I printed A1 sized shots of E410 and m43 OMD recently, I am amazed what an "aged" sensor can do.

Shoot more post more learn more! If you have more questions on Olympus, can feel free to post directly on 43/m43 subforum. Should get faster answers.

Read the manual, watch plenty of YouTube videos on photography and borrow some photography books from library are the essential and free training to taking better photos. Keep shooting
