Default Photo Sharing - Sangalaki 18-25 Jan 2005

A few photos from my trip. Just came back so haven't had time to do much yet.

Vis not that great, but fulfilling trip nonetheless. Bad weather so didn't go Kakaban or anywhere else. Stayed on Sangalaki so only dived around the island.

Apparently, April and September are the best times to go. Think June-August not too great coz weather there not so good. December/January not the best time as well...

There's a good mix I think...Saw some nudibranchs that I never saw before like the Jorunna funebris and Jorunna rubescens (this thing was like 20cm long) and Chelidonura varians. Loads of turtles. Saw leopard shark as well. Manta's the main draw of course. Good vis they say you can see up to 20-30 Manta's lined up...I only saw 3 max together.

Also, saw this thing on a sea cucumber...looks like a millipede crawling around...any idea what this is?

Including all the beer I think about 3K? This is the off season...and no special deals for airfare...6 days diving.

The are actually 2 ways to get there. I took the flight from Singapore to Balikpapan, then from Balikpapan fly to Berau. And from Berau take a 2.5-3 hour boat trip to the island.

I think the other way is to to via Tawau...cheaper but a much longer way and have to spend a couple of days overnight in some of the places (both ways). The way I took, it's only the way back that I stayed overnight.

I think these are taken before my strobe flooded so yeah, with strobe. Those last few days without strobe, vis was quite bad, so didn't get much shots.

I stayed on the Island itself, and there's only 1 resort (www.sangalaki.net). It doesn't say on the website, but on the island, they posted a notice saying if you can get 24(!!!!) people, it'll be USD95 per night compared to USD200 per night (twin share).
