Use an iPhone or any phone with front-facing camera and practice with it (not too close to avoid distortion) to know your best angles. Take a few shots and let your friends choose and comment.

I'm very sorry about that, TS. have you tried adopting better skin care? Or perhaps even light make up?

You probably need a good eye cream if you're starting to look like a druggy.

If you need help, do let me know.

you are probably too conscious of your looks and thus it shows on the photos and how you react to it. Just be happy and smile. Why bother about what other people say? They will continue to make fun and comment, cause you are so bothered by it. This is you. You are not too bad looking, even in the photos.

Like someone mentioned, the way you position your body whereby it's away from the camera, but your face towards the camera doesn't do justice to your looks. You're doing it in all the pics. Notice the legs crossed, as if someone's about to pee? You need to look at male poses more, and you'll look nicer even straightforward shoot (with strobes) would raise the pics a notch.
Can see your body's not bad, just do an artistic nude shoot! that'll shut the critics haha

I do use eye cream but I'm lazy to use it everyday. Sometimes only once or twice a week cuz I forget. Even I'm not consistent with my moisturising but I'm definitely keeping a conscious effort. And I use the cheap crappy eye creams from....I think it's L'Oreal. Theres this double pump cream, half white half red cream inside. But imho, nothing beats a good long sleep. It's called Beauty Sleep for a reason.

I have a stressful job, I have piano lessons, practicing the piano and I'm self studying all my theater books after work, sometimes I just feel sooooo drained. I'm 32 this year btw.

THe thing Im most frustrated about is, my photos don't look like the real me in person!!! When I look in the mirror, I see someone who looks alright...then when I take a pic, it's not only unappealing, and my friends all laugh together when my face appears.

Whereas some of my friends who are, to put it gently, plain in appearance, they look fantastic even with chilli sauce all over their mouth and with 2 fishballs inside. In fact i do know people who look average/slightly above average, but they look like MODELS in their facebook profiles. And I'm not exaggerating. They look REALLY good in pictures. And I am envious of how they look in pictures.

I will be heading to Sephora and ask the salesgirl for the perfect shade of concealer to use for my dark circles. Bonrya if you have ANY beauty tips, just shoot. I am all ears!!

Eleveninth -> My friends are from all circles. My geeky IT friends, my colleagues from finance, my army friends, etc etc. We'd take pictures, view them together, and when my face appears....its 'BHAHAHAHAHUAUHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!"

Like I said, I have not linked any of those extremely bad pics of mine yet. If there are requests...I will put them up but I have to sift through my friends'/family's facebook pictures and go through the whole traumatizing act of looking at my bad pics....AND putting them up here.

Since you are aspiring to be an actor, this will do. Get a big mirror, a camera with a remote trigger and a tripod. Using these things, capture at least 100 different facial expression. At least 20 of these should a different type of smiles. Eg, shy smile, hearty smile, forced smile, etc. Do not tilt head as a variant. Just focus on your facial muscles only, forehead, eyebrow, cheek, mouth, chin. Use the mirror to check yourself for the subtle change to create a particular expression. After getting all the different types of expression. Practice to repeat getting them again. Now get a genuine and patient friend to check you out and repeat those expression. Keep practicing till it become second nature that you can accurately repeat that particular expression you wanted in an instant. All the best looking good in front of the camera and all the best for your career.

PS. Being able to standout naturally in a photo is actually a good thing, a star quality. Now you just need to look what you want to present on camera.

Dennisc -> Thanks for the compliment. Yeah I do work out in the gym and I have started taking some protein powder recently. Just working on getting the abs but damn I work in Raffles/Tanjong Pagar and theres SO MANY GOOD FOOD at Amoy Market. I just had Bak Chor Mee which is a huge no no for getting abs haha.

Btw I'm googling IMDB: 50 Ugliest Male Actors and I think all of them look more photogenic than me. And I'm having a great laugh. Really if you all want the really horrendous pics, i will muster up my courage to find them and post them up. There's nothing more I enjoy than making people laugh and cheering them up.

Coolthought -> Thank you so much. I think I will be mustering up my courage and pride and approach my friend who is a fashion photog (His photos are awesome!) and get him to shoot me. I just need to think of what to say to him hahahaha!!!

I think the reason why you look bad is because you are trying very hard not to smile.
Trying to control your emotion and expression will turn anyone ugly because they look too artificial.

I have taken may photos of my co-workers for company's employee web page.
The best looking photos are those who smile naturally showing their teeth.
The bad one are those who try to suppress their emotion and hide their teeth because of minor imperfection.

Learn to smile like you won a million bucks and your photo will be worth a million bucks.

TS yur face look ok what... not like Danny Trejo, one real ugly face ( one that only a mother will love) but still can look cool on photo. The the main problem is that you keep raising your chin in the photos. This will make:
    1. your jaw/chin look larger than your forehead.
    2. your nose look bigger.
    3. make you look down. thus the druggy eyes.

you clamp your lips and jaw... making you jawline more angular, and you tilt your head. The whole pose is very wrong and do not work for you.

try googling "how to do/pose head shots". and practice in the mirror... you will see a big difference.

also look at the lens of the camera when your photo is taken. not the shooter... which will cause you to look up.

    Hope this helps.

There is no ugly people... just photographers giving bad directions. hahahaha...

Thanks everyone for your comments. My free trial account at AADB (Asia Actors Database) just ended and I'm going to do the paid subscription for it so I want to have a good picture that represents what I look like so that I can get to auditions and show my hard hard work, land roles and work along side people like Adrian Pang, Glenn Goei, Ivan Heng etc.

Theater is my dream. I need to get my foot into MUSICAL THEATER. And I don't think someone who looks Druggy will be asked to audition.
I have a tough day job, I work my butt off during my jazz piano classes, I read all my theater books after work even on weekends, I go to gym after work, I eat properly, I work so hard I want my dream to come true.
So if someone random says I look scary, imagine what all the directors will think when they see my photographs. They wouldn't even give me a chance for an audition.

Ok to summarise what everyone said
    1) Don't raise my chin/ Dont Tilt my Forehead up
    2) Relax my jawline.
    3) Try to smile...show abit of teeth (I'll follow Boo The Dog!...Google if you don't know who he is Haha!)
    4) Lean Forward, don't lean back.
    5) Look up (But wouldn't I look surprised when I tilt my face down and raise my eyes?)
    6) My Posture. Stand straight, open my legs slightly shoulder width when standing.
    7) Get a concealer to hide my eye rings. Sleep more.
    8) Be more consistent with my skin care routine.

Please add more. I will take every criticism and learn from them.
And those who said I look normal even in my pics, thank you so much.

    4 more questions,
    1) Should I keep my head very straight?
    2) What colour should I wear when I go and take a photo? Will white make me look washed out?
    3) The tips on tilting my face down but looking up, won't this make me look surprised?
    4) I'm actually a little tan, or rather, I tan easily. Why do some pictures make me look washed out.

My fashion photog friend agreed to do the shot for me. In this 1 month Im gonna gym like mad, eat very healthy, make sure my skin care regime is tip top, go for 1 facial treatment and I'm sure I won't look like Rowan Atkinson in pictures anymore and more like myself!!

In the meantime, keep them tips coming!! I really appreciate all of you who really helped me. Thank you!!

    Cheers!!

you have ok facial structure. however you look tense.

you need less stress or have to relax more for photos. yawn before shooting, this will relax your jaw muscles bit.

your smile must reach your eyes when your mouth moves. think of very happy thing. if no happy memories imagine signing up a large number of happy and successful trader clients.

you might or might not like makeup. don't really need that either for healthy glow. just do twenty jumping jacks to eat blood flowing before taking photos. blood rush to face will looks healthy and athletic.

lastly if you are heavy coffee user, cut down.
