Hi, I am new to Olympus, having used Nikon all my life. My cousin is considering getting the E300 and I have 1 fundamental question on raw conversion in E300:
In the Nikon system, the Capture sofeware (optional extra) allows users to batch process and edit pictures BEFORE batch converting them to jpg. Is this the same workflow in the E300? I heard one must convert Raw pictures into jpg BEFORE working on them. Is this true? This way is very tedious as I will then have to edit them one by one. Please help, and convince me to convince my cousin to get the E300. Cheers... |

Don't worry, my first camera was a Nikon :-) I have an E1 which comes with Viewer SW (free) for Olympus RAW (.orf) conversion. Viewer is qualified for use with the E300 by Olympus although it's not provided with the E300. You have not clearly defined what 'working with them' actually means, so here's my take on them. Well, if you're shooting JPG to start off with. There's no use for Viewer. except for batch conversion to other formats eg. TIFF (8/16 bit), JPG at 3 compression levels with or without EXIF. If you shoot RAW, then a single application of user-defined RAW parameters related to exposure compensation, colour temperature, contrast, sharpness, saturation & colour space can be applied across selected images for batched processing to a single selected output file format eg JPG. You can choose from a preselected list of file naming conventions for the batched files generated. That means you are allowed to re-define the RAW parameters BEFORE executing the batch process which applies the customised RAW parameters. Legitimate E300 owners can chime in on the capabilities of Oly Master SW that comes default. Hope this helps from the Viewer SW point of view. Cheers, |

Thannks chancy,
What I meant was this: When I shoot with the D100, (RAW) I purposely under-expose my shots by 1/3 to as much as 1 stop. I will load these into my com, and through the Nikon Capture 3 software, do a batch correction to correct exposure (Still in RAW). Then I will fine edit all those which is still under-exposed or have been over-correct in the raw format. Reason I do that is so that any whites in the picture does not get "washed out". A properly exposed picture in D100 will sometimes get the whites' details all gone. So, can I do that in e300? Or do I have to manually adjust every raw file? |

Thanks for taking time to word your requirements clearer, I can verify that the workflow you described works for the Viewer SW (at least for the Mac edition). You can set a single or combination of RAW settings (eg. exposure compensation +-2 stops) & have those same values applied to your each & everyselection of pictures as part of the conversion to JPG/TIFF/PICT format. That said, the Kodak sensor is reported to handle 'white-outs' well. You may not need to undergo the exposure compensation process (if that's the only RAW parameter to be adjusted) during capture :-) You will need to take into consideration the availability issue of the Viewer SW (only for the E1, abeit for free). Cheers, |

Does that mean:
1. I do not have to underexpose my shots in Oly raw? 2. If it happens, I can use the SW viewer to do my corrections? Wow, if that is true, I may even switch systems!!! |
