Default Kranji Walk

Hi
Here are some of the various kinds of birds
from Kranji Walk and the Kranji War Memorial
Park.

3D map of the area from Space Shuttle Radar mapping.. You
can see the sandbar that people collect mussels.

You can see Braminy Kites flying very low in your face hunting
the grass patches throughout the day.. I guess they get hungry
all the time.

Its the end of the day and the birds fly home to roost. This is
en Egret.

The Eagles come out to fish, this eagle was preparing to strike
but all the illegal fishermen drove him away. He looks like superman!

Grey heron

Its a nice place to take a walk.. and after that you
can buy Ice Cream.

Its also a great place to practice action photography of
birds in flight.

Hi
Thanks for the compliments but my photos are not
the best... I am still learning and the Kranji place
allows you to test your skills and correct your mistake

I had the fortune of meeting John Ng who passed me
a tip.. Shoot at ISO 400 and shutter speeds of min 1600 and
above.

After I changed my techniques by John's advice, the photo
I believe increased in quality by leaps and bounds
All my shots are handheld. A bit of noise can still be seen..
to get rid of that you have to reduce the image size ..

ISO 400, Shutter 1600, Manual mode , F5.6. 80-400 VR
Nikon Capture processed to remove ISO400 noise.

One more interesting observation:

* I was told by another friend that to improve autofocus speed
you must use Manual Exposure.

This was verified!! my 80-400 VR AF Focused 20% faster or more

As the sun moves or cloud cover comes around you need to keep
taking photos and changing your manual exposure, increasing
the F# for White Egrets and MINIMIZING the F# for grey herons or
darker birds .. That is why I chopped my Shutter from 2000 to
1600 to light up the bird.

I wish to see more people sharing techniques and locations
so that we can all learn. But the general rule of thumb is
to find large bodies of water and you will find the predators.
After which you need to visit the place to check out the
angle of the sun.

I hope to buy a Nikon Camera with Noise Free ISO 400 or even 800!
There should be some news in FEB 2005.

Hi! Allan,

Thanks for sharing the tips on shutter speed and on focusing speed when set to manual mode, will keep that on hand to try out the next time..
I agree, noise can be annoying... so which Nikon Dxxx are you eyeing at? that is noise free at ISO 400 not to mention ISO 800... Think most of the guys here would love to have a test of it...

Thanks for the valuable tips about the F# I'll try it out this week, if the weather and my workload permits...

Hi
yep the eagle was diving at me on Friday , but suddenly changed
its wing shape when it saw so many illegal fishermen..

It was after all the HALF DEAD FLOATING CATFISH thrown into
the water by the illegal fishing techniques employed by the people
there..

So a good tip if you wanna photo graph eagles, choose a HOLIDAY
so people go there and throw catfish into the water all day, the
eagles have a field day..

I hope they dont swallow a HOOK.
