Did you first charge the new battery to full charge? Or you just plugged it in & started shooting away?
You are advised to charge the battery fully first. Btw, how much did you pay for your IXUS 40? |

yes it heats up fairly easily. It's like that with canon Ixus models I believe.
As for your battery problem, it should not behave like that if u fully charged it initially. After my first charged, I used it quite some time before the low-batt signal came on. Canon really should do something about battery-level indication on their cameras... |

Yup, it gets kinda warm after a few minutes of use. But that should be OK. I just find the color a bit washed out though. Some other members commented that it is because Canon, Nikon & another maker try to stick to 'natural' colors. But I don't find that very true. I was viewing my daughter's picture taken with my IXUS 40 and she was right next to me in person, wearing the exact same clothes -- color in pix was kinda bland .Btw, what other freebies did you get other than the 7-in-1 gift from Canon? |

if they shift "blame" and refer u to canon, den u bring ur cam down to canon service centre at keppel bay tower during weekdays and "bang" table real hard...u try insist tat u wan change a new cam.... ..... sometimes they will gif in if they realised it is their products which is faulty in the 1st place....and btw ixus cams get heated up quite easily one because of their metal body..so no need worry too much abt it... ![]() |

Did u charge a minimum of 4hrs? Subsequent charging takes approx. 90mins. Also note that it take approx. 180pics. Also a quote from Ditigal camera review on battery: "Battery Life: Slightly better than average battery life for a compact model, but think about buying a second battery anyway. Like most compact digicams, battery life on the SD300 is a little on the short side, with a worst-case run time (capture mode, with the LCD turned on) of 99 minutes by actual measurement. This is actually better than many compact and subcompact models, but I'd still strongly recommend purchasing a second battery along with the camera, and keeping it charged as a spare. (Digicam batteries always die at the worst possible times.)". It happens to me when I just got the camera....... There will be a warning on low battery....then the camera will turn itself off. |

The only rant I've about ixus40 is the weak flash....but again, most ultra compact cameras face the same problem......but I love the small form factor of the camera! The best part of this camera is the movie mode |

NYXX88 was right on the topic.
If I remember correctly, the original NB4L battery is rated at 760mAH, meaning it can supply 760mA for an hour when fully charged. This figure is slightly lower than the S500 series camera. And each battery can guaranttee to last only 300 charges. OEM batteries for this model could go to as high as 900mAH according to some sites. But it is not really correct for it to translate to more shots because of different technology in battery design and production. Same as there are different alkaline batteires in the market and they are not equal. |

Hi,
A little off topic, but was wondering, any of you Ixus 40 owners found the camera noisy when operating it? I am referring to the mechanical noise that seems to accompany any actions/buttons you operate. Tried muting the camera, but the noise is still there. Any one can share their experience. Thanx. |

Hi, Thanks for the info on batt -nyxx88 & Malcolmneo.
Well, i bought my camera last one week ago i was trying to learn on how to use my ixus 40's function but i failed to. So, here's a few questions that i hope someone could help me out: 1. Could anyone tell me what is the function of the frame icon, frame with a dot and frame with a circle and a dot in the middle? I can choose this option when i switch to the manual shooting. Is there any example when is the best time i should use this function? 2. I notice that when i switch my camera to manual, the pics tat i took can easily blur with a little vibration. How can i solve this problem? 3. Is there any tips for shooting pics without using flash in places that has insufficient lighting to get the natural color? I notice that when i use flash the person in the pictures looks kinda pale. I did try on ISO400, i can get a natural color but the quality of the pics is not quite a satisfaction. Because the pics that i took is not very smooth and clear. Is it perhaps because i vibrates a little during the time i shoot the pics... If any1 has a good website that teaches ppl how to use the canon camera and its function to shoot a better pictures, please do tell me. Thanks a LOT! ![]() |

1) I tink u talking abt the light metering function is it?? There is 3 types - evaluative, centre-weighted and spot metering. It is jus to evaulate the lighting conditions den adjust the exposure of the pic for u...For normal usage, evaluative and centre-weighted is enough already. But in situation when the backlight is strong, eg bright sun behind u, causing ur face to look dark. In this situation, u can use spot metering to place emaphsis on the exposure on ur face instead thus making the exposure ard ur face brighter... 2) u may have set a slow shuttle. u check ur menu, check whether u have ur "quick shot" on or off.... but slow shuttle is good for night shots, but u would need a tripod or stable place to prevent the blurriness... 3) Small digi cams have probs taking pics at high ISO due to their smaller sensor..ISO 400 and even 200 will cause the pic to be very noisy....but tink there 2 way to overcome this...1) u might wan use the scene mode in ur cam when taking pic...u can use the "night snapshot" in manual mode to take... 2) or u can set the shuttle speed...for ixus, u can onli set 1sec and above onli.... but for both ways, u would need to use a tripod or put it on stable place to prevent handshake.... This is roughly wat I know...hope it helps....btw if u r in spore, u can always pop by the canon showroom at funan or keppel bay tower there to ask the ppl there to help u...or just gif them a call also can.... ![]() |
