The 100-400 dun think is constant? L means more for use of special lense that makes the overall quality higher. But most if not all L are constant.

What do you mean by constant volume ? You mean internal focusing and internal zooming ?

he probably means that means the maximum aperture is the same for both ends of the zoom range

No.. I read somewhere that some zoom lenses when you zoom, the lens barrel doesn't extend at all. So the air volume within the lens is constant. Supposedly it is good cos it doesn't suck air in and out

Any lens, prime or zoom, as long as it needs to move glass elements back and forth internally for focussing and/or zooming, with shift air. Pick up your 50/1.4 and see if there is any dust inside, you betcha there is!

Just an urban myth to be best ignored!

I think it's just a matter of degree.

Constant volume zooms shift air internally, while the non constant volume zooms have air coming in and out of the lens from the atmosphere.

It doesn't take a PhD to realise that one will be more likely to introduce dust into the lens than the other.

Not just an urban myth, I think it DOES make a difference.

Some lenses are also environmentally sealed.

It also depends on lense also... Although my 100/2 is internal focusing, it collect a good amount of dust compared to my 50 and 24.
