Book budget airline famous for delays. Departure flight is delayed by 1 day. Arrive at destination country at 11pm. Stay in hotel 1 night. (considered 2 day 1 night) Next day want to fly back. Return flight delayed by 1 day. Squat at airport, no hotel provided by budget airline. Arrive back in Singapore at 11pm on 4th day, at the end of "4 day solo holiday".

Cost depends on your choice of transportation.
Bus is the most economy way to travel in Taiwan(NT350 to 500/p). Take train(up to NT620/p) or high-speed train(up to NT1200 each).
By bus about 3-3.5 hours from Taipei to Chiayi. The bus station is close by Taipei train station.
High-speed train 1.5 hour to Chiayi, but the Chiayi station is a bit far from downtown where you can get transfer to Alisan.
The regular train will take you direct to Chiayi main station, where you can transfer to "Alisan train".
The regular train to Chiayi takes 3 to 4.5 hours. Fast train costs more.
Alison train usually go up to the mountain in early morning. You may have to stay in Chiayi the night before you go up to Alisan.
Need to check whether the Alishan train from Chiayi had started running again; it ceased operation after a landslide.

actually, if you want to catch the sunrise in Alishan (which is wat most people do), get to Alishan itself the day before. You can either take a train up or a bus. There are many hotels there. But if you are on your own and don't want to spend too much money, there are some small guest houses there. Some are just above the shops or restuarants. Walk around and ask. There is no need to book in advance unless you are going there during peak period eg Xmas/New Year or local public holidays. In the mornings, the hotel people will wake you up at 4 plus, you head to the train station with hundreds of other tourists and take a train to the top of the mountain and wait for the sunrise. It is a long wait, but is worth it. sunrise itself is over within 15 min. And everybody will rush for the returning train. Within half an hour, the whole place will be empty and you can have the whole mountain to yourself.

there are oso some treks around the area. if you like being with nature, can wander around the whole area for half a day or more. very tranquil.
