    'Rodgers has right attributes'

    8th Jul 2012 - Latest News

Former Reds boss Roy Evans has offered a unique insight into the experience of becoming Liverpool manager and claimed Brendan Rodgers has the right attributes to move the club forward.

Evans, who first joined the club as an apprentice in 1965 and was handed the reins as manager between 1994 and 1998, revealed to Liverpoolfc.com the tasks Rodgers will have been facing this week after his squad returned to Melwood for pre-season training.

"Obviously it's quite daunting on your first day," said the 63-year-old, who replaced Graeme Souness midway through a season which saw the Reds finish eighth. "From Brendan's point of view, he doesn't know most of the lads so he's meeting new people.

"He needs to put across what he intends to do and how he intends to do it, what he expects of the players and staff. He will have plenty of time to get on the training pitch before the season starts, which is good.

"The man management side is really important. You try to get the best out of your players, try to talk to them, because they are all different and they all have different personalities. You treat them as a team when it comes to games but you have to be individual with them on a daily basis.

"When you do get the job, you realise what it means to so many people, what responsibility it holds. But when you realise that the future of your club and the fans' club is in your hands, your first day is very nervous."

The appointment of a young, upcoming manager has pleased Evans, who praised Rodgers for his impressive mission statements so far and noticed a hint of former Liverpool bosses in the new man at the helm.

He said: "I think he did an excellent job at Swansea, playing some great football and decent to watch - all the attributes that you want Liverpool to be.

"The pressure starts when the games start and that becomes a different thing. But so far, I think he has made a great start and people are looking forward to seeing where he can take us.

"It's time to go forward with a young man. I like the way he talks about football, he sounds passionate and he has a touch of some ex-Liverpool managers in him so far."

Swansea's 11th placed finish in the Barclays Premier League last season was a surprise to many, as the Welsh club flourished with an attractive, passing game. Evans warned that expectations will be higher at Anfield, however.

"If you have come from Swansea, where the biggest thing was to stay in the Premier League, the other end of the scale is that the expectation at Liverpool is massive and that's something he will have to address," Evans continued.

"It's not an easy job but he knows that, and if you come to Liverpool you don't expect it to be easy, you expect it to be challenging and that's what it will be.

"The toughest thing is always the results because results are everything and fans judge you by results. But Brendan will know that, it's not something that will be a shock to him. Hopefully he can deal with that and be successful."

Evans was a central figure as a succession of legendary managers took charge of the Reds during the 1960s and beyond, but asked to name his managerial hero, he pinpointed Joe Fagan.

"I was a massive fan of Joe Fagan because he was straightforward and honest. You won't find any ex-players that played under Joe that would knock him. If he said you were playing badly, you took it," said Evans.

"He was a bit like my father. Joe was great in the professional game and I always had a great relationship with him. Joe will always be my friend in football management, with the style I would like to have had."

Rodgers has always espoused his own style of football and Evans is confident that only a few minor changes, along with a unified vision at the club, are required to bring improvement to Anfield.

He said: "We are a passing team, we have the ability to do that and he has a good start on that. We need to be a bit more aggressive at home; we should take the game to teams very early. Just a more positive attitude and we need to take more than our fair share of chances.

"Your backroom staff have to be supportive of you but you want them to have their own ideas, not just say yes. But once you've decided what you are going to do, they have to back it to the hilt. That's what you want from a backroom staff and they are massively important to the manager."

Evans admitted his pride that his Liverpool side of the mid-'90s are considered one of the most enjoyable to watch in recent years, but concluded that winning is all-important.

"The best part of being a manager is when you win, it gives you great satisfaction. You don't think you have any problems when you win; when you lose you think you have a million. You don't get carried away but you enjoy the moment."

    Liverpool close in on signing

Brendan Rodgers is close to bringing at least one fresh face into Liverpool, but is reluctant to reveal the identity of any of his targets.

Reds manager Rodgers admits he does not have a "wheelbarrow load" of money to spend in the transfer window as he prepares to seal his first Anfield transfer.

However, he has stressed any new arrival will have to have the right character as well as technical ability.

Rodgers, who opted out of the chase for new Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson as he refused to pay over the odds for the player, said an "exciting" deal could be completed in the next few days.

"We don't have a wheelbarrow load of money, there is not the money flying about people think there is," said the Northern Irishman.

"There certainly won't be as many [signings] as is being labelled out there.

"There have been a whole raft of players being linked and only a few are real targets for us.

"The reality is we have only made three or four enquiries about players and hopefully can close out one deal this week which will be a real exciting one for the club, one the supporters will absolutely love.

"We want to work with the great players we have here and make three or four tweaks in relation to the squad that can help the group.

"We want to be competitive in every game and challenging at the top end."

Rodgers stamped his authority on the job early on when he refused to meet the wage demands of Sigurdsson.

A deal had been agreed with former club Swansea, where Rodgers had worked with the player for the second half of last season, but when Anfield became an option for the Iceland midfielder the financial side changed.

The Reds boss said he was only willing to may the market value and as a result the 22-year-old moved to Tottenham.

That has put down a marker for any new potential signings as Rodgers knows exactly what type of player he wants.

"This is a club which is a way of life, it is not just a club where you turn up for two hours' training and then go away," added the 39-year-old at a press conference to publicise the club's pre-season tour to the United States for matches against FC Toronto, Roma and - coincidentally - Sigurdsson's new club Spurs.

"You have to be prepared to come into the culture and philosophy of the club and if you don't, then it's not a problem but this is not the right fit for you.

"I want players that are hungry to succeed and want to match the ambitions of how we want to move forward and the reality of that is there are very few players who can match that.

"I don't just want to identify a player and then let them come in at whatever cost.

"One of the things which distorts the reality of football is money.

"I don't see the sense of a player coming in if we have to pay over the odds for him.

"There are many good players out there but not many who have the courage and bravery to play the way we want to."

Rodgers fails to guarantee Carroll future

Brendan Rodgers has left an air of mystery over the future of 35 million striker Andy Carroll amid reports that AC Milan are preparing a loan bid for the England striker.

Carroll endured a testing first year at Anfield, often struggling to hold down a first-team spot as he failed to live up to his hefty price tag. A brief upturn in form towards the end of the season saw Carroll selected for England's Euro 2012 squad, but it remains to be seen if he fits into Rodgers' passing style of football.

"He's a good player, Andy. He'll always be linked to clubs whether he's here or not," Rodgers said during Monday's press conference. "I spoke to Andy on his holidays, and he knows where he stands.

"I've spoke to a lot of the players and he's a very good young player. He'll be linked to many clubs because he's a good player. "I haven't had anything from them [Milan]."

Asked directly if Carroll is a big part of his future plans at Liverpool, Rodgers replied: "Initially it's about assessing the squad, you never know until you come in. The pre-season is broken up due to the European Championship.

"But certainly come the start of the season I hope to have the squad that I can take through. It's a case of building a squad that can compete at the top of the table."

We don't get too many rumours, unlike the other teams:
Only Gaston Ramirez, Clint Dempsey, Borini, Daniel Sturridge.
But I suppose any of them will be a good addition to the squad, though Sturridge seems like a selfish version of ex-red Babel.

Alonso refuses to rule out Liverpool return

Xabi Alonso has refused to rule out a return to his former club Liverpool in the future but insists that he is currently happy at Real Madrid.

Alonso may have left Liverpool three years ago in 2009 but he still enjoys something of a cult status at Anfield.

The Spanish midfielder had a fruitful year both on the domestic and international front, lifting the La Liga title with Real Madrid before lifting the European Championship barely three months later with Spain.

Despite the recent successes, Alonso still reflects fondly on his time at Liverpool, and opened the door to a future move back to the Anfield outfit.

"I spent five fantastic years in Liverpool" he told ESPN STAR Sports Christy Simson.

"It was an experience that - I didn't feel that when I got there that it was going to be as wonderful as it ended being."

"I am really attached to Liverpool, so who knows in the future. At the moment, I am doing fantastically - I am not moving."

Liverpool fans will undoubtedly be rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of seeing of the most successful players in the game play for the Reds again.
