Default Heard of a $2.2k foldable bicycle?

Was amazed to read that NPark bought bikes at that price! I purchase a 'D' brand more than 15 years ago that can be folded and put into a carrying bag for $500. I thought It was expensive when I saw other brands going for less.

From the link: "On Wednesday morning, the Minister noted in a blog entry that he had checked with NParks and found that productivity was a key consideration behind the purchase."

Well probably they can be 4x more productive compared to riding a $500 bicycle..

And probably the bicycle is macam this one:

NParks staff merely need to get from point A to B in order to check the park connectors. Why can't a $100/- bike from Giant not adequate...? Just because KhawBW checked and it was purchased within tender guidelines does not means it is not extravagant.............

Are you one of those, who is using the bike to actually get from that point A to B... if not, how you know a $100 bike from Giant will work as good ?? Also.. does anyone here knows what is the fully contract for NPark's purchase... I mean... with the purchase... how many years of warranty and parts ?? Could we said the same about a $100 bike from Giant ??

Personally speaking.... I rather NPark spent $2200 per bike, for X numbers of bikes, for their staffs who had to patrol the parks on not always well paved roads or trail.. as long as no one gets a 'cut' on the deal... then the same amount going to upgrade some minister's car...

Most photographer hobbyists merely shoot to post on web, why can't P&S be adequate?
Most people want watch to tell the time, so everyone should just use Casio basic model?
Go to holiday is for relaxation, you can do that with a hammock at East Coast Park.
Take train to go from point A to point B, stand on top also ok, since that is your basic purpose, why people complain about packed trains and delays and breakdowns?
Drink water from water bottle, use cheap cheap non-branded bottle will do, why are there brands like Sigg, Nalgene?
Wear shoe is to protect foot, all the market stall one will do.

And many more other examples... Of course it's debateable how far the line goes, but you see many people here preaching the principles of getting a good tripod straight off instead of buying many cheap ones - I think that's the underlying idea here.

    yep.

if any of you done govt tendering before, you will know the amt is inclusive of service, maintenance etc... this is not a perishable purchase (ie. one-off). since it is a fixed store, it is not as simple as mass-buy $100 bikes from Giant and that's it.

my only quibble is why bromptons (even if it is a good bike.. personally, i rather like a strida) and not something else. still... before anyone goes around crucifying NParks, i would like to remind the over-zealous people here to be mindful of CS' T&Cs for KPT.

when a Government body or MNC makes a purchase, usually there are incentives and discounts thrown in e.g. free maintenance, spare parts for a longer period, lower prices etc.

so when normal consumers like us look at the price tag, we balk. the actual price could be much lower

$2200 for a Brompton is a really good price esp if there is a maintenance and parts package thrown in with a fleet buy

A 2nd hand Brompton locally usually sells on togoparts.com for between $2200 to $2500 already

Who's decision to make these extravagant purchases?

    Who approved?

Who are the people who tender for the purchase contracts?

    How were these tender's sought?

How many of such tenders were considered?

What were the factors and reasons for the decision upon going with the selected vendor instead of the rest?

Was the minister consulted before such decision was made?

Is there a need to buy 26 at one go?

Why not buy 6 first as trial run before considering to buy 26 if it works well?

Actually, the purchase was NOT made through the official Brompton distro. As such, they do not get the usual 5 years warranty, etc. That's the point that was raised by a commentator on the ST article (the poster is the actual Brompton distro).
