IMHO:

17-40mm 4L and 70-200mm 2.8L IS (best but also very ex, the rest of the ranges for 70-200mm also well received).

Anyone has any idea which is a good mid-range zoom lens to get? The 17-40mm though very sharp is not very good for portraits. The 50mm f1.4 is good but have to change lenses when taking a group photo.

I'll go for 24-70mm L f2.8 if I do not have lens of that range and my first L lens. I think I'll use it to the fullest at least it covers 85% of my shoot.

Overall, I would have the same opinion as loupgarou. However, I would also add one more equation to this....

Know what you are shooting more, then you will know which lens to buy.

My first L was the 70-200/2.8L, back when there was only one version of the 70-200. Fond memories of it. Back then was still using film, so can't really tell if it was sharper than my 28-135IS. But could tell the colours were punchier and cleaner.

If i were getting my first L today, it would most likely be the 70-200/4L.

besides, if you love wide angle and have a camera with EFS mount, then you wouldn't pick the 16-35 or 17-40 either.

I like shooting protraits that's why my 135mm f2.0L was the first L-lense that I had. Good sharp picture, squeaky clean colours and smooth bokeh!^^
