Default DPP vs Photoshop CS

Was editing some RAW photos yesterday, when I realised that RAW images that are opened with DPP first then converted to JPEG are a lot sharper than images that are opened directly with Adobe Photoshop CS. Colour tone and saturation was also very much nicer..
Images were taken with 300D + 24-70 f2.8L, hence I found it weird that the images were very soft when opened with photoshop CS. Thus I tried out using DPP to convert to JPEG and editing with photoshop, and the results were so much better...

Is this normal? Anyone else has same experience?

whatever dpp does, photoshop can do, just have to incorporate whatever saturation settings, sharpening settings that are required.

I have no experience with 300D raw conversion using DPP but with a 1Ds, my findings are the opposite. DPP is however my tool of choice for quick browsing. It's much faster than CS for this purpose.

So in Photoshop Camera Raw Window, I have to turn up the sharpness setting to maximum for every photo when processing?
