not to worry, they are not alone. singapore is catching up soon. public housing or CONDO

anw, singapore is always competing with HK in container port, standard of living, competitiveness ets.. one latest entry would be housing or CONDO..

SINGAPORE: Minister of State for National Development Lee Yi Shyan has singled out poverty, pollution and poor infrastructure as key urban challenges.

He said an unfavourable global economy can add uncertainties and slow development.

Mr Lee called on mayors to seek practical solutions to urban problems ahead of the World Cities Summit in Singapore this week.

"Worldwide, 828 million people live in slum conditions, lacking basic services such as drinking water and sanitation. This number is increasing by six million each year to hit 890 million by 2020," he said.

"In many cities, we are trying to catch up with adequate infrastructure. In short, we are behind the curve."

The United Nations forecasts that by 2025, there will be 37 megacities in the world. Five years after that, half the people on the planet will be living in urban areas.

This means spiralling pressure on the environment - more waste and pollution.

To stay ahead, many have looked towards Singapore as a model.

Danasiri Amarathunga, a Sri Lankan mayor, says the Republic provides lessons for developing cities.

"There are a lot of things that you can learn from Singapore. Especially the public housing," he said. "There are a lot of shanty areas, squatters in Colombo city. We'll have to move them out, (but) we have to keep them inside Colombo city also for their work purposes."

"If we can go for high-rise flats like Singapore does, that will help the community as well as all these people in the city," he added.

According to the news, he bought that house from a previous owner, not knowing the latter built illegal structures.
CY Leung seems more credible (to care for the disadvantaged) than Henry Tang who was hobnobbing with tycoons, developers and magnates.
Maybe HK will send a team to Singapore to look at our flats.

I think at the beginning it was Singapore who sent study groups to HK to look at their high-rise solutions.

CY Leung has a humble beginning and hopefully he has a greater empathy for the poor.

It was argued that Henry Tang was the son of a wealthy family and he was pushed to stand for chief minister election to protect the interests of the tycoons. He probably has the best cellar of the expensive wines in HK. He is not a good communicator with unimpressive command of Mandarin and English. He doesn't need to be the chief minister as he has fine wine, women and the wealth to lead a charmed and lavished lifestyle.

The tycoons supported Henry Tang's election despite the scandals surrounding him. CY Leung is an unknown to them and they fear he may change the laws to encroach their vested interests.

IIRC LKY said HDB studied UK's public housing system.

TBH none of the candidates were impressive. Henry hid behind his wife after Cellargate.

If you compare the maps between HK and Singapore, you'll find it is more challenging to build tower blocks in HK as it is hilly and Singapore is flatter.

The huge tower blocks in mid-level in HK rising from steep slopes is an engineering marvel.
