Thread: David Gan gives his take on cheap hair salons

Default David Gan gives his take on cheap hair salons

    Sounds pretty familiar too, eh?

Take for example the hair dressing industry in Singapore. Ive seen salons promoting haircuts anywhere from a dollar onwards?! I know its a marketing strategy but it just makes the whole industry look so cheap! Wouldnt it be better if you just gave FREE haircuts and persuaded the clients to do chemical while youre cutting their hair? What does it say about your salon if you rate your haircuts at 2 dollars? I think youll have a better career as a beggar with no rent and no overheads! Hair dressing use to be a skill that you can chose to acquire if youre not good in school but where is the pride now when haircuts can go as low as 80 cents on promotion? Freelancers in this industry doesnt really help either. Do you think the reason they can charge such low rates is because they dont have to pay rent or TAX? They are so plastic! Ive seen them suck up to stylists by telling horrible pretentious lies to get free publicity! Lucky i dont have to pretend coz Im David Gan and I have Passion! I see a very dark future for our industry if this joke continues.

I take pride in being the best hair dresser i can be by providing my skills and service as well as creating the perfect environment for all my clients. Having the right teacup, music, pictures, displays etc makes a difference because every little thing counts. Ive been working for 30 years and Im very thankful to still have a hand full of clients who believes in my skills and the good service that my salon provides.

Im very disappointed and Ill never understand why people would charge such low rates for haircuts nowadays but I have to learn to live with their existence

Actually what he said is true. It applies to many other industries too...photography happens to be one of them.

Because there are people like me, with not much hair left, and don't need to pay $200 to shave my hair, or what ever is left..

There are no art involve in shaving a no. 3 head with a clipper. there are no art in shooting a passport photo as well.
you don't charge $200 for a passport photo.. right?

I believe there are very good hair dresser out there to work with intricate hairs. which deserved to be well paid. but likewise, there are people who just need passport photos.

I recently went to a photo lab at Raffles Place to shoot some passport photos. Photo booths at MRT stations charges $6 but this photo lab charges $21.

I paid to the photo lab, and got my passport photos. The photographer used a D90 with 2 shoot-through umbrellas and a silver reflector. the results are quite nice...

Do I really need studio quality passport photos? Nope, but I do like the photos and willingly pay the price haha!

    • This is not a joke. It is going in that direction. Too bad for over-priced hair salons.

    • David Gan's salon business is hurting. Otherwise he/she/it won't say this.

    • It shows consumers are finally waking up and knowing how to get value for money.

    • Cutting head-hair is not brain surgery or open heart transplant. David Gan had a lucky break in Singapore. But should not over-value hair styling services.

I second the guy above me. I've met eye surgeons tons humbler than this hair cutter.

Hair cuts are a necessity. Everyone needs a hair cut, but not everyone can afford his prices

People who are willing to pay for a $80 haircut will never go to those 80cents shops. Vice versa.

    Sad times for him.

I remember he like to mention he is his hair stylist for Zhang Ziyi in every chance he has. But now even that is hard with the Zhang Ziyi scandal going on.

Lucky for me... BMT hairstyle could be cut by myself with a $75 electric shaver...

It's not going to make any difference to me whether my hair is cut by a $350 or $1 barber.

In fact I find the badly my hair is cut the more distinctive I look.

Why would anyone think a bald guy can give a good hair cut?

How can you a hairdresser's skill by their hair when they can't possibly cut their own hair?

    There's a trick that I learnt:

When you walk into a salon for the first time and unfamilar with the hairdressers, don't pick the one with the best hair cut.
The hairdressers cut each others hair, so the one with the best hair cut was done by someone else, not himself

Please support local barbers before you fly to Shanghai for a haircut.
