Pelangi - much nicer than Berjaya and there's this great restaurant run by a German family just 100 yards up the beach

If you want to stay near the Seven Wells and Cable Car station, then Berjaya Resorts (exp) or the Mutiara Burau Bay (less exp) are very good choices. Not sure if they have recovered from the tsunami effects or not. Best to call first. You might want to rent a car to drive around too as transport is a problem. Can rent car from airport, but must bargain a bit.
If you wanna stay in town, then the Bayview is quite good as it is near shopping area and Chinese food (very few places got Chinese food ie coffeeshops). Also, better rent car as everything is quite far away.
Tip. you might want to give the P. Payar a miss as the water is cold at this time of the year and visibility is low. Also, cost is quite high too.
Recommended: hike up the Seven Wells and picnic for half day if weather is good.

Datai/Pelangi/Berjaya are good choices.

The other fly by night rental is very cheap but unsure what is their level of services/insurance if there is a problem. I remembered renting a Proton Saga for 4 days and it has no problem lugging 4 of us. The roads are pretty ok. Signs are not so good in the middle of the island, but it is not a problem.
7 wells is an interesting visit. But do not venture beyond the safety sign. Many garang farang met their fate there.
If in town, visit their night market (one long stretch of sarabat stores selling otak to tandoori chicken). Not sure which day it is opened.
