Might as well just shoot in a mode that gives you the meter reading. Open up the aperture sufficiently so that shutter speed need not be more than 30s. Take test shot and if all ok, adjust parameters accordingly.
Eg. Base ISO, f/4, 2s ok, then change to f/11 and speed to 16s (or bulb mode hold for 16s). Done!
Might as well let the camera help you.
