Default Apple drops Google Maps and uses its own maps

It is not the smartest decision. Can be a serious strategic error.
Pundits wondered about the future of Apple after Steve Jobs is gone. Now we know.

    Why reinvent the wheel?
    Does Apple maps have Street-View?
Will it be comprehensive enough for countries outside the USA? Can the level of zoom-in detail match Google maps?

Is Apple planning to make iPhone/iPad users PAY $$$ for the use of its maps, in due time?
Restaurants, shops and other places that want to be shown on the Apple maps may need to pay Apple money.
In this way, Apple can earn money from advertisers as well. A short-sighted mistake.

They are tied up with a gps provider. Plus they recently bought a company which extrapolate 3d models of the map from 2d data.

Expect Apple to come up with their own search engine next.

Takes massive finance and manopower to re-duplicate what google is doing for google map.

A simulation of 2d-3d is interesting, Garmin did something similar for their newer nuvi models i think. But a finger walk on Google street view is way more fascinating.

plus Google also demoed their own version of 3D mapping recently, probably to steal the thunder from the Apple announcement...

Hayes, Polaroid and Kodak had in their heydays been the all conquering unstoppable leader of their respective industries. They too must have felt like Apple today.
