Default New BBC Documentary On Singapore

BBC Two, The Fall of Singapore: The Great Betrayal

For 19 years before the fall of Singapore to the Japanese, British officers were spying for Japan. Worse still, the Japanese had infiltrated the very heart of the British establishment - through a mole who was a peer of the realm known to Churchill himself.

A little know fact, the British Indian Army Captain by the name of "Patrick Stanley Vaughan Heenan" who had conducted espionage for the Empire of Japan was eventually tried and convicted of treason before being executed at Keppel Harbour by his British prison guards in the final days before the Fortress of Singapore fell to the Empire of Japan.

His name still remained engraved on a wall in the Kranji Commonwealth War Memorial alongside thousands of others who died honourably.

Thanks for sharing. The Straits Times was as crap 70 years ago as it is now.

Who knows perhaps next time someone visit a barber, he or she may just be a full colonel in a foreign power possibly tasked with providing pre-strike and post-strike Bomb Damage Assessment (BDA) next door for his employer.

It was mentioned "... The report on the air raid was a small real estate on page 8, with no screaming title and accompanying illustration..." but you may be right though, time constraint could be an influencing factor on the minimal coverage.

It would be nice for the British if they can simply blame the downfall of their empire on a few traitors. It is also amazing that Sempill could join the Admiralty despite being monitored closely by MI5. Ultimately the war is the hellish doings of persons like Hitler, Hideki and Hirohito.

Not really, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was sitting by as Adolf Hitler blitzkrieged across continental Europe with little resistance up till the final months of 1939. Many members in the House of Lords and House of Commons are actually anti-semitics who sympathises with the causes of Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazi), this also included members of the British Royal Family such as King Edward VIII before his abdication, and thus preferred a policy of appeasement.

The Queen Mother (Queen Elizabeth) even once said that Adolf Hitler can invade the United Kingdom for all she cares as long as the monarchy is not abolished.

Yes. exactly. and also the fact that their army was pretty much stretched thin.
