Default Problems burning photos using iBook

I have problems reading images burnt using my iBook on a pc. Initially, I thought it was the problem with the built-in burner software. However, when I installed Toast recently, I have this same problem.

These images I burnt were scanned using a film scanner, the Minolta Dual Scan IV. A friend went through these images and said that the scanner software didn't save my photos as thumbnails. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Would appreciate advice asap as these photos are meant for a client and I've spent days scanning them into my iBook.

I did not encounter this problem when I was scanning photos into my old pc. They can be read on both mac & pc.

In Toast, did you select the disk type as "PC & Mac" or "Mac Only" ? If you selected the latter the disc will not be readable on the PC. What format are the images saved as btw?

just wonder, what are the differences between "PC & Mac" vs "Mac only" format?

will it take up more space? why choose Mac only when you can have support for both format?

Initially, I just used the built in software for burning. However, when I used Toast to burn my images & selected "PC & Mac", the problem still persists. The images are scanned in tif or jpg. According to my friend, for some strange reason, there are no file extensions in the images although they are scanned in tif or jpg.

I wonder if there is any way to make my photos readable on pc. Sigh...

Default Assuming you're on OSX

Although I never had problems reading CD-Rs burnt on an ibook/powerbook I did have some issues with CD-RWs. Check whether your PC can only read CDs which have been 'finalised'.

No, the icons that appear in my pc are not those of jpg or tif. I've no problems reading on my mac though.

Erm, that could be the problem...cos those I have problems opening are on CD-RWs. Tomorrow I'll bring some CD-R I've burnt using the Mac to the office to see if I encounter the same problem.

Same problem! Even the CD-R don't work!

I'm pretty sure it's the Dual Scan software. When I re-save the images in PS as jpg and burn them, I can open on a PC. Can anyone shed a light on why Dual Scan doesn't save images with a jpg or tif extension after scanning?

Are you at least be able to see the files on the CD-R/RW you burnt on the PC? If it's just a missing extension you just need to make sure the extension is there when it's saved. OS X can work with files without extensions and it knows how to launch the file's opener/creater without depending on file extensions (like Windows), that's why you have no problems on the Mac.

Not sure why your DualScan software doesn't save with extension tho, you might want to check its Preferences to see if there's an option to enable the extensions, failing which you might want to batch rename the files before burning.

If you're using Toast, I think there's this check box that says "Resolve Aliases". Check on this box. Also, I will always select ISO 9660 Level 1. For whatever the reason, it never fails me.

I have resolved my problem....the long way. I added in the extension to each of the image in pc, all 400 of them! When I scanned my photos using my old pc, I didn't encounter this problem. Guess there are still some compatiility issues between pc & mac. I also realised we can't add in the extension to files in mac, unlike pc. I did that and I can't open my photos in mac thereafter.

As for Dual Scan, I normally do a batch scan. Since I've oredi selected jpg as the format, don't think I need to go to the extent of using ".jpg" when I manually rename my files right?

funny..i dont have that problem writing tiff and jpeg files to mac&pc cd-r using toast. the file extensions are always there so can read on my office pc. take a look at finder preferences or do a get info on the image files. there is a check box about file extensions there. not sure if that has anything to do with it.
