The Gamble Of Cleaning House At Anfield
FSG have cleaned house, and now have a blank sheet of paper at Liverpool. Nick Miller says this is an enormous moment for the club, & this decision has to be the right one...

    curry sauce

And so, Kenny Dalglish has gone, and FSG have cleaned house. And by God, what a gamble it is.

Not especially that it will provoke an extreme backlash from Liverpool fans, among whom the support for Dalglish after this season is not as widespread as some would have you believe. There will be a fair bit of wailing, many who will quite sensibly say he perhaps should've been given more time, but plenty more who will be quietly relieved.

The gamble comes in the empty offices at Anfield. The club now no longer have a manager, an assistant manager (Steve Clarke has gone too), a director of football, a head of communications and possibly a chief executive (at the time of writing, there are rumours Ian Ayre has gone too). In addition, their plans for a new stadium/refurbishment of Anfield are sketchy at best, and they are lumbered with a collection of very expensive and under-performing players.

John Henry and Tom Werner basically have a blank sheet of paper in front of them, which is simultaneously a fairly terrifying prospect, but also a great opportunity for them. It's almost as if they have said 'OK, we tried your way, now we're going to do it our way.' They had better know what they're doing.

They now have a chance to create a club in their own image. They can build something new, and it's something they have done before. When they took over the Boston Red Sox back in 2002, they took stock for a bit, decided that general manager Dan Duquette and manager Grady Little were not for them, sacked both and their replacements won the 2004 World Series.

Success of that magnitude will obviously not come that quickly with Liverpool, but they made the right decision in baseball (manager Terry Francona and wunderkind GM Theo Epstein delivered another World Series in 2007), and they absolutely must make the right decision in football.

'Who next?' is a question we will ask in more depth in the coming days, but they cannot make another mistake now. What might be slightly concerning is that they are already, under two years into their tenure, into their second cycle of management. Damien Comolli and Dalglish were both appointed by FSG, and have both been dismissed (although the Dalglish decision was almost thrust upon them by circumstance), so is there anything to suggest that they can be trusted this time?

The good news is they seem to be making the decision from the correct standpoint. I wrote after Liverpool's defeat to Wigan that only sentiment was keeping Dalglish in a job, and FSG's dismissal, only days after the end of the season, indicates that they have made this decision with a cold appreciation of the facts in front of them. There will be no sentiment, nothing clouding their judgement. Their distance, both physical and emotional, should theoretically be a great help in this appointment.

This is an enormous moment for Liverpool. They need a management team that will stabilise the club, be there for a long time and, in the words of a book about the 2004 Red Sox, 'create a new blueprint for winning.

So, not much to ask then.

Dalglish an appointment out of time

    May 16, 2012

    By Richard Jolly

"You want to move the club forward back to where it was before" - Kenny Dalglish, April 2012.

The concept of the past being Liverpool's future was one of the contradictions of Kenny Dalglish's second coming. Once the finest of strikers, he assembled a side that struggled to score. The Kop's darling managed a team who sent their supporters home frustrated by their inability to win at home. His charges were, until an awful first hour in the FA Cup final, terrific in the knockout competitions but, by Anfield's high standards, terrible in the league. A man who can be funny, even charming, in private proved needlessly hostile and invariably awkward in public.

A unifying figure when he returned, initially as caretaker manager, 16 months ago, had become divisive. Among his adherents, Dalglish was the answer, a galvanising force who had been let down by Damien Comolli and underperforming players and suffered at the whims of the woodwork, opposing goalkeepers and the Football Association.

For others, especially outside Anfield, he was the problem, crying misfortune instead of accepting Liverpool's failings, a manager whose policy of buying British had been a costly catastrophe and whose results, once so encouraging, deteriorated to the level that only Aston Villa, Blackburn and Wolves took fewer points in 2012.

"Disappointing" was the word owner John W Henry diplomatically used. It was an understandable understatement. The last 19 league games have yielded only 18 points. That should be unacceptable for Liverpool, just as eighth place, 47 goals and 52 points are nowhere near good enough. Hence the dispassionate decision taken in Boston. If the sacked manager's name were not Kenny Dalglish, this may have been uncontroversial.

Instead, it is the bravest move Fenway Sports Group could have made. Dalglish, rightly, commands huge loyalty at Anfield; many have memories of the Scot delivering victory in the 1978 European Cup final; still more, and still more significantly, recall the humanity, humility and dignity he displayed after the Hillsborough disaster. His is a greatness that extends beyond 172 goals or 515 games in a red shirt.

Pity, then, the successor who has to compete with a legend. Unless the next manager gets immediate results, the Dalglish diehards will call for the return of their King. They will be disappointed: American owners have shown they are Republicans. A Boston Tea Party has led to their declaration of independence from the Merseyside royalists. New World sensibilities have been imposed on a traditional club.

And as director of football Damien Comolli, head of sports science Peter Brukner and director of communications Ian Cotton had already discovered, they are ruthless. The level of FSG's disappointment with Liverpool's season should be obvious, the feeling that they deem the last 12 months a wasted year very clear.

Dalglish has been guilty of a series of misjudgements, both major and minor, over a troubled year. The mishandling of the Luis Suarez affair damaged the club's reputation and the team's season. His prickly persona was more of an issue in an age of 24-hour rolling sports coverage than it was in the analogue days of the 1980s; a man who, as Henry said, "personifies everything that is good about Liverpool" contrived to alienate and annoy in front of a camera.

His transfer dealings made it hard for FSG to trust Dalglish with funds this summer. Given the chance to perform a high-budget overhaul, he compiled a squad lacking a reasonable alternative to Lucas as a defensive midfielder or a clinical finisher. It was a group where almost all the finest performers were already at Anfield, the majority of the weak links the recent arrivals. There were too few signs that enough were playing for the manager in a dispiriting end to the campaign.

Meanwhile, the excessive fees paid for Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam reflect poorly on Comolli. But the actual assessment that they had the talent and temperament Liverpool demand was the manager's mistake; they formed part of the case for the prosecution of Dalglish. The question has to be posed if the 61-year-old has the knowledge of foreign football required to recruit abroad; until comparatively recently, during his extended break from the frontline, he was still confusing two Premier League strikers with similar names but of very different capabilities.

Some complained that Dalglish had too little power; arguably he had too much. The manager was reluctant to heed advice - wearing the Suarez T-shirt was a particularly imprudent move - and at times his instincts betrayed him. For him, his way and the Liverpool Way were one and the same.

And yet this was not the 'Liverpool Way'. That was an incomparable tradition of winning. This was their poorest league season in half a century and came in an era when, unless in exceptional circumstances, the Premier League and the Champions League are the true barometers of progress.

After initial improvement when Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson, Liverpool regressed. After a year of expensive underachievement, they are further away from contention in May 2012 than they were in May 2011. And so Fenway Sports Group will take a very different approach, almost certainly targeting a younger, more progressive manager. The sense of sadness that a job Dalglish had wanted to regain for 20 years should be removed from him after one should not disguise the necessity of a change at the helm. This is no time for sentiment.

Dalglish, the perfect appointment in 1985, was an imperfect choice forced upon the owners, 26 years later. The game had changed, and he proved a man out of time. Liverpool have made a decision to part company with their glorious past. The nostalgia trip is over. Now they have to accelerate into the future.

Liverpool begin talks with André Villas-Boas
By This Is Anfield On May 17, 2012

    · In LFC News

    curry sauce!!!

Liverpool Football Club have begun talks with Portuguese manager Andree Villas-Boas over potentially being appointed the new manager of the club, however it is understood several candidates are being contacted.

Villas-Boas was sensationally sacked by Chelsea just two months ago after less than eight months in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The 34-year-old had previously lead Porto to Primiera League glory in 2011, the same year as winning the Europa League. It is well documented that he has been compared to fellow countryman and former colleague, Jose Mourinho.

But Villas-Boas isn’t nescessarily top of Liverpool’s want list as they begin talks with several high profile managers.

Roberto Martinez of Wigan, Paul Lambert of Norwich City, Brendan Rodgers of Swansea and Jurgen Klopp of Borussia Dortmund have all been linked, as well as former Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

Fenway Sports Group are keen to appoint as soon as possible and reports say they have a £30million transfer budget awaiting the new boss.

Villas-Boas is now favourite with the bookmakers for the job, but the BBC report “he is unlikely to get the job”.

Liverpool have no front-runners to replace Dalglish

    curry sauce!!

    By Ben Smith
    BBC Sport

Liverpool's owners are keen for the club's new manager to be in place for at least four to five years, but there is no front-runner at this stage.

Tom Werner and John W Henry have begun the search for the Reds' fourth boss in two years after sacking Kenny Dalglish and have a number of names in mind.

The new boss is likely to get a transfer budget of more than £30m.

Intermediaries acting for the club have spoken with Andre Villas-Boas, but he is unlikely to get the job.

The Portuguese was sacked by Chelsea in March.

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is also not thought to be in the running. The Americans are known to have been impressed by Wigan manager Roberto Martinez but no talks have taken place.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has often spoken of his admiration for the Anfield club and it is thought he would be willing to grant the Spaniard permission to discuss the post with Henry and Werner.

Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are keen to appoint a replacement at the earliest possible opportunity.

Dalglish left for Spain on a planned family holiday on Wednesday night. His wife Marina wrote on Twitter: "Really sad day for us a family but we all remain LFC fans. All so proud of Kenny."

On Wednesday, sources close to Henry were keen to stress the American owners do have a clear vision for the future of the club and are likely to appoint three senior directors in the coming weeks.

Meetings have been held with a number of potential directors of football, including Johan Cruyff and former Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain, while they have also spoken to at least one candidate to fill the chief executive's role.

Henry and Werner are also thought to be close to appointing a new director of communications to replace Ian Cotton.

While the departure of Dalglish has left something of a power vacuum at Anfield, FSG felt they had to act given Liverpool's failure to challenge for a Champions League qualifying place, a clear target at the start of the season.

Liverpool's most recent annual report revealed that the club's prolonged absence from the competition had cost the club a minimum of £30m in revenue each year.

While the owners were encouraged by the Carling Cup victory in February, the first silverware since 2006, it could not cover up the failings of a poor Premier League campaign.

Steve Clarke, Dalglish's assistant, has stepped down out of loyalty to the 61-year-old Scot.

I also have good feelings about Carroll next season. He very hardworking, and when he plays, always a threat to opponents. Problem is he did not have much play time this season, and mr Downing sucks at his crosses....

I think £30m cannot buy 2, at most 1 and another KKJ player. We have Sterling, whom I feel can be a great player if he works on building his size and strength.

Enrique needs to go, slow and useless, let academy players play better. At least they will chiong and give all out.
