Default Lexar 1GB SD Card - Users be careful

Thought my loss here might help to sound out folks with the same card to backup your data/photos regularly.

I recently lost about 200MB woth of photos from the above card (which I believe to be 32x version) after having it for about 2 months. Part of the fault lies with me for not backing up the card regularly. I initially put this down as extremely bad luck on my part but just this morning, my friend with the same card called me up and told me he had the same problem as well after less than 2 months of usage. Perhaps the batch of 32x we bought is defective....

The problem is that the camera simply refused to recognize the card. Attempts to format the card with the camera was also futile. Needless to say, I could not even get Windows to recognize the card as a storage device - much less format it. My wife was furious as the card contained photos of my family and son for the last 2 months.

After some digging around, I managed to find a local company which specializes in recovering data. The card is now in their hands and they are working to retrieve my precious photos. Fingers crossed, I am hoping they can recover at least 80%... The service is not cheap (double the cost of the card) but memories cannot be quantified by $$...

So, moral of the story, backup, backup and backup. And those using the same card, please backup whatever you have now and take a trip to Convergent and have them test the card for you.

Thanks for the kind words. The card is still under warranty. I have read that Convergent does not recover data for customers (based on other discussion threads I have read) so I didn't bother. But what I would do is take the card to Convergent after I get it back from the recovery company. I will also write in to Lexar to enquire about this problem.

Now I just hope I can get back the photos...

I'm sorry to hear your exprience with Lexar SD1Gb. But like all manufacturer, Lexar do not grantee 0% failure.

We do help customer retrive data but like all other Data Recovery company, we do not grantee that we will be able to do it but we will try to do it for free so long it's our company product.

I totally understand your predicament and I'm really sorry to hear that. Please bring it back to our service bay and we will try to work on it and also replace you with a brand new set.

Cheers and Happy new Year

I have the same problem with my Scandisk ultra 512mb CF.
It has failed me 4 times since I got it about 5 months ago, but each time I managed "to reset" it with my pc with just a few images lost. My cam read it as "error".
However I have never had problems with the other cheaper brands of CF, 512mb Hagiwara and Kingston even though they are with me for more than 1 year now.

i had the same problem with my kingston card.

the camera recognised the card, intermitently, but my pc couldn't read it. not with a card reader, nor when the camera was used to transfer.

brought it back to convergent who couldn't salvage my shots.

was, and still am, devastated. it was filled with pictures taken during National Day. first time at a parade, last parade there before the reno, and first time there with my girlfriend.

needless to say, it has left a damn sour feeling inside me over everything associated with this. (yes, read between the lines, that's what i mean)
