I'm in UK and I've seen a second-hand russian manual focus 300mm f2.8 lens for sale for around $1000? It looks in excellent condition - anyone think it's worth it? I'm leaving tomorrow so let me know quickly!!

Depends. It's probably about all the money, if you're patient you can get an AF-n for about £400-450. OTOH if you're well heeled enough, I reckon I can get you an AF-I for £1000 or an AF-S for £1300.

Back to my point guys - 300mm f2.8 manual focus lens for $1000 (actually just under)?? Should I buy - I could use the extra focal length - at the moment just have 200mm.

See above. It's all the money really. For £400-450 you can get an AF-n Nikkor. Which [1] is a Nikkor and [2] is AF. But if you need it now and don't want to wait, then by all means buy the Russian one. But S$1000 is not cheap and if you are buying it because you think it's cheap, then I wouldn't.
