You may catch up with the sticky thread about tripod selection.

Most follow-on questions to your query would the gears attached to the camera that would be mounted on ball head that is screwed onto the tripod.

Alternatively, you may catch up with the discussion at the following threads

Here is a basic guide on tripod selection on CS : http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/other...ipod-head.html

Check out / estimate the weight specs of your setup (including lenses) and that supported by the ballheads / tripods.
General consensus is to get better setup so you might not need to change them too regularly unlike how DSLR bodies/lenses come and go.
Carbon fibre ones are lightweight and pretty stiff. There are many shops that you can try and fiddle around, places like Cathay photo has a nice selection.
I personally have Markins ballheads, a CF Velbon and a CF Gitzo monopod that lasted me > 5 yrs.

    1) What is your heaviest setup.
    2) What do you intend to shoot. Different tripod heads serve different purposes, although for many of us here, ballheads do work well.
    3) What is your budget - aluminium alloy tripod is heavier but cheaper, carbon fibre one are lighter but much more expensive.

Without any answer to the above three questions, it would be very very difficult for anyone of us to give you accurate advises.

All tripods are troublesome to carry around.
So just focus on it being stable. It is the most important thing the tripod has to do

Handheld when shooting landscape can also be achieveable. It all depends on the lighting of the environment. In strong lighting... no problem at all. In actual fact, I have done quite a bit of landscape photography using handheld too.

    Not true la...
yes a tripod and shutter release cable are certainly beneficial, but landscape photography need not require these equipment all the time

If you find most tripods troublesome to carry around, I'm not sure if any tripod will satisfy you.
The use of (expensive) materials such as carbon fibre have enabled tripods to be light yet strong, but they're still no featherweights

I dont like carrying a heavy tripods especially for overseas travelling.
My heaviest setup is a 5DIII and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS II which weighs about 2.8kg.

I have experimented with various options of Manfrotto tripods and ballheads and I am currently using a 054Q2 ballhead with a 732CY carbon fibre tripod, which weighs about 1.5kg. Take note that other manfrotto ballheads rated below 5kg may not be able to sustain the load especially when this setup is tilted at an angle (I have tested some).

This may not be the most stable of tripods as stability come with additional weight. But so far it has served me well.

Even if someone invented a auto setup and keep tripod, you still couldn't make the tripod lighter and less crumblesome.

Well, one just need to get used to when using a tripod. Anyway, once I had rely heavily on my tripods, but recently, I seemed to have ditched them in my room and go everywhere with just the cam.

Actually I was wondering... TS can consider a clamp with camera mount? It's kinda unorthodox...
