Thinking of getting one of these to get a WA lens for scenic shots..
Is this a nice & good lens? Or should I look at something else? Thanks for your tips! ![]() |

this lens from review is pretty ok.....but i believe that there may be some light falloff at the edges.... if u are using DSLR however, then its ok....coz the cropping factor will compensate the fall off....
heard tt its tact sharp for images too....but i dun really know...never saw anyone using it before.... for alternatives however, u can try the 12-24 zooms..... or perhaps the sigma 20mm i heard tt these two are ok too.... for my scenic shots i use the tokina 19-35 ....its pretty sharp for a lens its price and produces great colours too..... cheers! |

Go for it. If you can hunt around find the earlier versions with the metal hood. Reportedly better flare suppression. I like light fall off
it give you that nice vignette effect. I use the older version and got my nikon mount one from TCW a couple of years back for $180. U can't complain at that price. |

wow its only $420 now? Thats cheap. Back then it was $6xx. I'd go for the used one though. CS members generally do no have the opportunity or the know how to abuse a lens (tongue in cheek :P) so it should be fine!

These were shot with tokina 17mm 3.5
I don't have other wide angle so I can't compare with other types. http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=107047 http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=107032 |

Maybe save up for a 16-35/f2.8 instead..
Heard the 17-40 is a bit weak of the tele side.. OTOH the 16-35 is weak on the wide side =) |

I have the old tokina 17mm and I love it.
But once it goes on a digital slr wah lau eh! not cool anymore. So I keep my film slr for personal shots. Thinking of buying the sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG Aspherical can be used on film srl as well anyone has used this lens on a film slr? Comments please. |

$400+ is a good price for a wide-angle lens! This lens is well-built and the optics quality is good, worth buying!!!

Have not really shot with it yet, but one thing that amazes me is.. wah.. the lens construction is SO GOOD man. I think it is almost L quality. Only thing no USM and FTM lah.. but still, for the small kind of money, it is solidly built. |

I used it recently when I went out for Eye e City. Hope shots turn out ok. I use it without looking thru viewfinder. It's a hit and miss affair but it's fun that way. It's like using a Bessa-L. |

I have several metal-bodies 135mm lenses worth under $100 that woud make the Tokina's engineering look like congee.
I tried out this lens on a commercial shoot once (OM-4ti). Solid Benbo tripod, moderately short (1/8 - 1/15sec) exposures indoors of shopping centre shop fronts etc etc etc... Was utterly disgusted with the results. I would spend a few hundred dollars more and get a better lens and live happily for the rest of my life! Only MHO hor. I am not bitter or sour grapes because I was using an 'out-of-the-box' brand new unit on foc loan from a shop. BTW, if you're shooting digital SLR, and need the coverage, search prudently and be patient. Some very good 2nd hand offers turn up from time to time. |
