I read the user manual but still confused.
so, i just turn on the VR switch and shoot right? bcos i look at the picture (downloaded to my PC), can't find any difference with VR ON or OFF leh. i tried 1/30, 1/20 and even 1/10 at various focal lengths. I can hear the VR mechanism moving....thus, think VR motor is not spoilt.... or i am expecting too much that it is only Vibration reduction and not vibration ELIMINATION? ![]()

See that at last you got THE lens. I was advised that I should not switch the VR unless I really need it. It suck batt and no good having the mechanism moving all the time. Enjoy the good lens.

I believe there's something called manual that came with the box
![]() Just use it like any other len. The idea is to reduce vibration and get you same images at slower shutter speed. Definitely this would give you same results for the possible slow shutters. |

Question - for VR lens, do we need to turn on VR when we mount it on a tripod?

Seriously guys. I have always had my reservations about Optical Image Stabilizer ....and all the hoohah it has caused. Think of it this way, it's never easy to compensate for the small movement of a large lens within the lens as compared to compensating with a small movement of the CCD to sync with the small movement of the lens. In the wise words of someone: Why bring the mountain to M, when M can go to the mountain. Also like throwing a ball into a net - it is knowing where to place the net to catch the ball no matter how the ball is being thrown.
I personally feel that the Anti-shake on the KM, works better than the OIS of the Panasonic and the Canon. (No kidding I have owned the Panasonic FZ10, FZ20, Canon S1 IS and the KM Z3). Back then I was shooting with 12x Optical zoom coupled with a 3.55x front extension lens. KM Z3 came out tops as far as I am concerned. But at the end of the day, it's your skill and technique that will decide how many of your shots are worth keeping. Paiseh ....said so much. FYI, none of the shots taken with 12X optical and 3.55X lens extension could be kept 'cos I had not enough skill and no techique. But I had a lot of Fun .... ![]() Last edited by Zenten; 30th December 2004 at 08:38 PM. |

I thought that VR is like magic.... will reduce dramatically the camera shake... but maybe i haven't really tested it.... so far only tested at home...

![]() It can only reduce handshake up to max 1/8s (for me), of course don't expect it to stablise while swinging the camera by the strap that kind of action, normal holding, AF, mild shake due to mirror slap can be countered by the VR. This len is truly one of the best VRs around for the money. |

Hi Paul,
I like you had super expectations for this lens when I bought it... was actually quite disappointed when I saw that the VR did not work magic to my shots... most of them are still blur... but told myself that I need to work harder to take good shots and this is a rather good challange. From what I have gathered so far, VR is most effective when you are higher zoom. When you are wide, the VR mechanism does not seem to make any difference. At the end of the day, turn on VR and tell youself that this is just a normal lens and go back to the fundamentals of shooting...hold your breath and steady hands... in cases of fast action or taking events... just set continuous shoot on and then you can delete the shots that are soft. I gave up using this lens without flash for dimly lit event shoot. For that I suggest the 70-200mm VR which is a constant 2.8. None the less, this is a really good all around lens... and the VR does work like I have posted on another 24-120 VR thread.... This shot taken at 110mm without VR on at night hand held... This shot taken at 110mm with VR on at night hand held... |

Set your lens to 120mm
aim the far object and try to snap at 1/30sec to 1/60sec handheld with VR on/off ... see the difference Last edited by megaweb; 31st December 2004 at 09:14 AM. |
