It's confirmed. There will not be fireworks at the marina area over New Year's Eve.

Got it from an official source. This is to tone down the celebrations in view of the tragedy that is happening in Southeast Asia.

Anyway, have a great New Year!

So sad to hear that the fireworks is cancel.

The Fireworks outing on 31st Dec will be cancel, since there is no more fireworks to shoot.

But, I will still be poping by to Esplande to checkout whats happening there.

Really sad that the fireworks is cancelled.

But we should feel relieved and glad that we are still able to welcome 2005 with our precious cameras, frens & whoever. Just think of those victims who are still stranded in their devastated land, I think most of them still dun know tml is the last day of 2004...

    alittle disappointed too.

    BUT...

also, quite relieved. i can just picture the ammo that "unfriendly countries" will be given to use against us. they'll simply love to print pictures of our fireworks and merry making side by side to pictures of themselves in solemn prayer for the tragedy...

that would have been used to really make us look bad in the world press.

it is not so much about looking good/bad in the press. what is more important is that, who will be in the mood to celebrate in the midst of such a disaster with the loss of so many lives and so much destruction? it is about basic civilities and sensitivity towards those who have suffered losses than about our face.

your point is noted. i am not inferring that there is no emotional element involved. i've already stated in an earlier post here in this thread

some people are of the opinion that life must go on, and not to enter the new year in mourning etc.

but on the other hand, it does feel very... aloof, detached and uncaring as a nation to be celebrating with fireworks when the disaster is of such magnitude and is recovery is still ongoing. (60,000 dead and expected to hit 6 figure)
