    Hi,

I am using Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II mainly for portrait shooting. Anyone using this lens? What other kinds of shooting do you this lens for? Thanks

You can shoot anything you want to that needs a 50mm focal length.

The limit is not the lens, but what is behind the camera.

My 50mm f1.8 talks to me one day, asked me to get his big sister the 50mm f1.4, then big sister asked me to get the ultimate big daddy 50mm f1.2L

You can shoot anything with your 50mm. Nobody said you can't use a 50mm for any situation

Do a web search and you'll see tons of images taken with the ef 50mm f/1.8 lens. It's also an excellent lens for IR

Do note that sometimes 1.8 can be too creamy for some shots though, although 1.8 is ultimately what we all want from max aperture.

Glad mine told me otherwise. He told me to sell him away because he felt unlove. Phew.

Some people can't live with such small aperture, they need f/1.2. Others just use an aperture appropriate to the situation, which can also be f/8.

Used to use this lens, upgraded to the f/1.4.
The lense produces a very natural color for portrait shots.
find that it works well for scenaries too. minus the wide angle of course.
    thats just me la.

Loved this lens. can use for portraits, macro (reversed or with filter), landscape, street, weddings etc.

I use my 28mm more now though.

it can produce photos with thin depth of field which you might commonly find in portraits and with a larger aperture, you will be able to shoot at a higher shutterspeed which is great for events or streets photography with low light conditions. Do find out the "sweet" spot (aperture size) of this lens for the best image quality.

Its just a lens. Like any other lens.. You can use it to shoot anything you want. Just that its fixed at 50mm and have a large aperture of 1.8
Matter is how you would like to use the lens.

50mm on a cropped body is like 80mm...But still the 50mm f/1.8 can produce nice images.Alternatively, you might want to try the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which produces even lovely shots, tats In my own opinion la.Cheers!

this is the best-quality-per-dollar lens haha!

as others have said you can really shoot anything you can think of as long as you like the composition when looking through the viewfinder
    portraits is the natural choice
can also do landscapes when you don't need the exaggerated perspective of a wide-angle
    and everything in between

shoot more with it and appreciate it!

After I got my f1.2L it became my precious....

But seriously, the f1.8 can take decent low light pics, example of the pics I spoon fed my friend (on settings) and she shot the below last weekend, using the Canon f1.8 II
