Seriously? For all the announcements asking all passengers to turn off their iPhones and iPads yet the pilot left his phone on throughout his flight?

Mobile phone of the pilot should have been off in the first place.

This pilot should be allowed to fly again - only as a passenger on a plane piloted by others - but never again as a pilot.

    Pilot's story is not convincing.

There was no need to struggle to unlock a phone to turn it off just to stop the incoming sms.
He can always ignore any incoming sms even if the alert tone is loud.
Mobile phone can be set to silent mode. Or alert tone of incoming sms can be set to a single soft beep.

Can check with the mobile service provider to confirm whether the pilot did key a text reply to the incoming sms, while he was trying to land the plane at the same time.

Really it is one of those "By Right" and "By Left" scenario, happens more often than you might imagine. Hopefully the passengers did not got spooked in anyway, those cockpit aural warnings can be pretty loud.

Well, the mainstream media sort of picked up the news after the final report (ID No. AO-2010-035) by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) was just released.

Plenty of sensational articles flying around including but not limited to "Texting Pilot Nearly Caused Jet to Crash".
