It's a no-brainer question. The Canon for its build, focusing speed, and excellent image quality.

although i have never used any of this lens before, all i can say about the canon 28-70 2.8 L, which 24-70 superseed is that is so sharp, you need not need USM for more than 50% of my close up (subject filling up more than 50% of frame) shots.
so i can vouch for it. (dying to get a full frame or at least a 1.3) to use this as my main lens!!!

I had Sigma 24-70 very happy, bought Canon 24-70 on impulse, sold off Sigma 24-70, not happy with Canon (backfocusing issues) after repair OK but still not happy, sold off Canon 24-70, bought another Sigma 24-70.
Happy ever after. Draw your own conclusions. |

You might wanna take note that 24-70 sigma uses 82mm filter.
Had used 28-70 sigma before and would say that it's value for money.

those who say the canon is better I wonder they have tried the Sigma before, or simply just saying...
I have not tried any of the above, so no comment. I have owned the Sigma EX 28-70mm, and it is a very sharp lens, and very well flare control, and focus to 50cm minimum. I am quite happy with Sigma optic quality. |

Alternatively, have you checked out Tamron's 28-75mm f/2.8?

backfocusing problems seem to a common problem with the 24-70L. mine backfocused quite badly. out of focus pics even at f/5.6 and f/8. sent to canon for adjustment now much better. happy again.

no hsm for this Sigma, but many have reported that its almost as fast as Sigma's 70-200 HSM
This Lens is sharp and highly recommended by many in DP forum... I'm selling this lens..brand new here AF is much faster then Tamron... 24mm vs Tamron's 28mm Sigma has much better built and Pro feel but of course heavier |

No HSM but focusing is fast. One of the reasons I switched back to Sigma is that I missed the short "zzzhh!" that told me the lens had changed focus and locked on. And focus was always spot on. With the 24-70L I could never be sure focus was locked on, and there was no sound at all when focusing. In fact,
there was this series of group photos I took using the Canon 24-70L where the lens was on MF and I did not even realize it. Of course, most shots were OOF. With the Sigma I would have realized instantly that there was no AF going on, because of the sound and tactile feedback of the lens zipping into focus. |
