The lens hood is suppose to reduce lens flare.
You only need it when there is a bright light in front of your lens.

the lens hood is used to prevent flare (bright blobs of light) on your pictures.

i use a lens hood whenever possible, whether it be day or night. in addition to preventing flare, it also acts as a protection for the front element of your lens, should you, God forbid, accidentally drop your camera. (ouch)

Or if u want to look cool and professional..
Actually useful for night shots when there are extra light sources u dun want to include. Considered flare also right?

read somewhere that it's good for reducing stray light in general, not just the kind that becomes obviously visible as flare.

i usually leave mine on all the time cos i'm careless, and it stops my lens from being scratched when i accidently bump into stuff

Solely to protect the lens, which is better? A UV filter or the len hood?

The lens hood on my D70 is quite hard to fit in and hard to remove... quite scared to put in on.

Is a rubber screw in type ok for use? meaning as effective in limiting flares? it is screwed onto the thread of the filter and since it's rubber it is collapsable. Advice appreciated, TIA.
